For those that might have missed the excitement that took place a few days prior, Nintendo revealed the Nintendo Switch OLED Model on Tuesday. With that, the new hardware feature a 7-inch OLED screen with a newly redesigned dock for the Nintendo Switch. Alongside the 64 GB internal storage and wired LAN port, there is not much else that differentiates the new SKU to its predecessors really.
Leading up to the announcement, Bloomberg reported that a 4K model was on the way at the time which swelled up excitement for a new hardware announcement. Additionally, the outlet later published a report on a OLED model as well. However, it was considered that both reports were remarking on the same unit. But, that is not the case unfortunately.
In one statement to The Verge, Nintendo told that the integrity of the hardware is similar to a base Nintendo Switch when comparing to the Nintendo Switch OLED Model. “Nintendo Switch (OLED model) does not have a new CPU, or more RAM, from previous Nintendo Switch models,” one Nintendo spokesperson told the website.
Elsewhere, another statement also happened to relay another clarification on the new OLED Model. In that, Nintendo explained to GameSpot that the Joy-Cons of older SKUs can be interchangeable with the Nintendo Switch OLED Model. The spokesperson said, “The Joy-Con controller configuration and functionality did not change with Nintendo Switch system (OLED model). The configuration and functionality is the same as that of the Joy-Con controllers for the Nintendo Switch system.”
Additionally, Digital Trends also received some clarification as well. Another statement explains that the Nintendo Switch OLED Model’s dock will be available for purchase separately. “The white dock and black dock will be sold separately (no HDMI cable, no AC adaptor, not in a package) on the Nintendo online store. It will not be sold at retail.” And similar to how Joy-Con operate on the new device, the dock is also interchangeable as well.
