In the lineage of releases from developer NetherRealm Studios in the past handful of years, it has been a toss back between Mortal Kombat and Injustice. While the developer previously shipped Mortal Kombat 11 for its most latest release, it is presumed the team will now be moving on over to Injustice according to the laid out pattern. However, that might not be the case.

Recently, NetherRealm Studios did confirm that it is done with Mortal Kombat 11 officially with no more plans for the most recent installment in the franchise. But, the team did not state what it is moving onto next. Howbeit, there is speculation that NetherRealm Studios  is on the chopping block for acquisition by another firm as Warner Bros. Games sells the the team, similar to what happened to Playdemic.

But, corporate Warner Bros. Games did denounce the rumor as it ensures both NetherRealm Studios and Traveller’s Tales remain a subsidiary. Despite the statement, Jeff Grubb in his latest GrubbSnax episode states the team will be transitioning towards another Mortal Kombat project while uncertainty still lingers with Warner Bros. Games.

You can watch the segment of the video below:

“I think I said [the next NetherRealm Studios game] is going to be Injsutice 3 or whatever. That’s a guess, it was an educated guess,” Grubb expressed in the video. “It made sense: they’ve gone from Mortal Kombat to Injustice to Mortal Kombat to Injustice, that’s been their cadence so far. But, if you think about it a little bit further, does that make sense?

“Does having NetherRealm using a WB-owned property right now make sense when WB is sort of falling apart in front of our eyes where who knows where NetherRealm will be next year. Like, is NetherRealm still going to be apart of WB and does it make it easier to sell NetherRealm – let is spin-off or whatever – if its making Mortal Kombat 12 instead right now. And that’s what I’ve heard is happening”

Previously, it was speculated heavily that Injustice 3 would be revealed at DC Fandome last year in August. During that, fans convinced that the announcement would take place since Mortal Kombat & NetherRealm Studios co-founder Ed Boon would be present for the virtual showcase at the time.

Despite the current concerns, Injustice does have plans later this year. In that, the series is receiving an animated film from Warner Bros. Animation. The full-length feature is said to release sometime in fall 2021. You can read the full report by heading here.

Are you hopeful the next game from NetherRealm Studios is Mortal Kombat or Injsutice?
