Although RGG Studio is prominently known as the Yakuza studio over at Sega, the developer is also notable for the Super Monkey Ball IP as well as Binary Domain and even Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown. So to learn that some of its leading talent is departing is certainly eye-opening to say the least. Toshihiro Nagoshi and Daisuke Sato last October revealed that is will be departing from the game studio.
However, it was reported prior to the announcement from Bloomberg that both Nagoshi & Sato will be leaving their legacy for a new endeavor to open a new studio under Chinese firm NetEase. Well, that is what happened in a separate announcement in January this year announcing the opening of Nagoshi Studio. Details remained light on matters of its first release.
When speaking with German website 4Players, Nagoshi explained some comparisons to what you can expected from the unnamed new IP at Nagoshi Studio. You can read the full statement which was crushed through an automated translator below:
I can’t reveal too much about our game yet, but I can give an approximate idea: It will certainly include violence as a game element, but I don’t want to go too much in the direction of thriller or even horror. My game should be more like a Quentin Tarantino movie – so there may well be humor. Something that is just intimidating or just bloody and brutal doesn’t suit my taste – I want a human touch, some silliness and some seriousness, that’s what I feel like doing right now.
Coming from Nagoshi himself, it is no surprise that one of the previous Yakuza leads is working on a new violent video game. And with him describing the new project to be “more like a Tarantino movie” does give room for a more western approach to his coming work. Films like Inglorious Bastards and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood both give accurate representations of the time period while bolstering on spontaneous actions from its characters which can work with how Nagoshi makes games.
Returning to work at RGG Studio, it is expected that another installment in the Yakuza IP is in development. Atop of that, a report made back in January shares that the Japanese developer is also pursuing a new IP altogether outside of Yakuza & Judgment as well. You can read the full report by heading here.
