The 3D platforming kickstarter from Playtonic Games, Yooka-Laylee has finally been given a release date for the Nintendo Switch. On December 7 you will be able to begin preloading via the Nintendo eShop, with the game being available to play starting on December 14. The game was originally planned to launch on the Wii U, but due to low install base and overall demise of the console, they decided to bring it forward to Nintendo’s hybrid console.
Reviews for the title have been a mixed bag, but the handheld nature of the Switch paired with the collectathon gameplay of Yooka-Laylee should make for a good fit and a pleasant experience. We gave the title an 8.9/10 in our review, stating that “this title will pull both kids and parents in alike for a great 30+ hour adventure”. It is also known that the game will run at 900p while docked, and 600p in handheld mode. This is fairly impressive, given the game is made with the hard to optimize Unity, and has suffered frame drops while running 1080p on both Xbox One and PS4.
You’ll soon be able to take Yooka-Laylee wherever you go, but for now, check out the trailer below.
