This past week continues to unravel what might be one of the most devastating times in American history witnessing what is and still unraveling in U.S. streets every day. More than a week ago, it was reported that Minneapolis Police Department Officer Derek Chauvin murdered city occupant George Floyd which swiftly erupted protests and violent encounters with law enforcement since then.
In response to the situation, the video game industry has responded with support of the protest with upcoming shows and live events to be withheld to give speakers and activists the platform they need to relay their voice for justice and change. This movement sparked with Madden NFL 21 team EA Sports postponing the event initially slated for this past Monday.
Now in a recent blog post made by Epic Games, the firm shares that this coming Season 3 for Fortnite Chapter 2 will be pushed to help give protestors their own standing during this troubling times for Black Americans.
Recent events are a heavy reminder of ongoing injustices in society, from the denial of basic human rights to the impact of racism both overt and subtle against people of color. We’re acutely aware of the pain our friends, families, team members, players, and communities are experiencing.
Epic Games adds, “we believe in equality and justice, diversity and inclusion, and that these fundamentals are above politics. The team is eager to move Fortnite forward, but we need to balance the Season 3 launch with time for the team to focus on themselves, their families, and their communities.” Season 3 will now arrive on June 17 later this month instead of the originally scheduled June 11th.
This week, we have witnessed similar actions being made by teams like Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red as well as Activision ushering a new time to be shared for the approaching Season 4 for Modern Warfare. Doing so takes the attention away from their projects to properly establish a better standing for protestors that need to relay their chants for equality in the United States.
