One of the biggest releases of 2025 is Gearbox Software’s Borderlands 4. After the wait for the third game felt like an eternity, learning that a fourth installment is shipping this year was certainly a surprise. Right out the gate, the title showed immense activity breaking records on PC. Via Steam, it was gathered that the game outpaced all prior releases on the platform when it officially arrived.

For our review of Borderlands 4, Rectify Gaming scored the newest entry a 8/10. “Borderlands 4 represents both the series’ greatest triumph and most serious technical frustrations simultaneously. When everything aligns correctly, it delivers the most mechanically refined Borderlands experience ever created. The foundation is excellent, but the technical polish just isn’t there yet.”

And, it has shown there is still some much needed work on the current state of Borderlands 4. Players online have been vocal about how the game performs. Via one thread on X, Gearbox Software head Randy Pitchford was seen biting back at those criticizing the title. “The game is pretty damn optimal – which means that the software is doing what we want without wasteful cycles on bad processes.”

According to Digital Foundry recently, it was revealed that even consoles are having trouble with the game keeping performance. Moreover that framerates are degrading over time as you play. You can watch the video below:

“Looking at PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S today, the crux of the issue is that frame rates visually degrade with continuous playtime on console right now,” Thomas Morgan expressed in the analysis. He went on to elaborate often rebooting the game can preserve a 60hz playtime. “So long as I avoid any more than 30 minutes of continuous play, the reading stays close to the 60 FPS mark.”

This is becoming more apparent as per decisions from the developer as well. Although promising a native Nintendo Switch 2 version, the release has recently been delayed indefinitely as Gearbox Software invests more time into optimizing the title. You can read the full report by heading here.
