And more is ramping up for the Game of the Year recipient as well. In February 2022, it was reported that dj2 Entertainment is piecing together a movie or show for It Take Two. Sonic the hedgehog writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller are both attached. However, the game does face now downfalls as well. From Take-Two Interactive, it did issue a lawsuit for the titling being similar to the firm’s name as well.

Awhile there is no development on the standing of the case, Hazelight Studios did reveal that It Takes Two has officially sold more than 20 million copies. The firm has went on to tease that work on the next game is already happening with details to share fairly soon.

“Getting a lot of questions about the next game. Here is a tease. It is a BRAND NEW IP called S**** ******N. Can’t wait to show it soon,” studio head Josef Fares shared in one post on X. Additionally, the official X account for the game studio also revealed a script for the redacted title as well. However, there is little detail to derive from what was shared. 

Despite that, known leaker @billibilli_kun on X did elaborate on the new title. Via an dealabs article, the leaker disclosed the new game is actually titled ‘Split Fiction’. Similar to predecessors A Way Out & It Takes Two, the new game continues this emphasis on split-screen, local-play experiences. Sources say the game offers a “dynamic split screen” which alternates between both vertical & horizontal.

Previously, Fares was known for making motion pictures such as Leo which he himself starred in or Zozo which went on to be awarded the Nordic Council Film Prize at the time. However, Fares’ latest release is currently in the works to be adapted to film/television in collaboration with dj2 Entertainment according to a new report by Variety.

“dj2 is honored to partner with Josef, Oskar [Wolontis], and the incredible team at Hazelight Studios on the linear media adaptation of ‘It Takes Two.’ Just like the rest of the gaming world, we fell head-over-heels in love with Cody, May, Rose, Dr. Hakim and the imaginative fantasy universe Hazelight have created, and can’t wait to bring these characters -and this world- to life on the big and small screen,” dj2 CEO and founder Dmitri M. Johnson told.

“Creating the world and story in ‘It Takes Two’ was so much fun for me and the team,” Josef Fares added. “Since it has a strong narrative with many crazy characters and just as crazy co-op action moments, the potential is huge for a great adaption to film or television.” Details remain slim on the future of the project for which firm will be responsible for production.

However, Variety goes on to disclose that Sonic the Hedgehog & Sonic the Hedgehog 2 writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller are both to translate the game to the silver screen. Details on expecting a television series has yet to be disclosed if properly established as of yet. The news comes at a curious time following the legal dispute of the game’s titling aligned with a similarity next to Take-Two Interactive.

As for dj2 Entertainment, this lands to be another video game-related production to add to its ever growing lineup. In the past the firm has shared its involvement in a Life is Strange TV show, Tomb Raider anime, Disco Elysium television series, and even the long ago promised Sleeping Dogs movie too.

Following the release of the game, Josef Fares remarks on the game selling 1 million copies. In that, Fares explains that the desire for rich, cooperative experience is still prevalent, and that the industry is responsible to offer more tales aligned in scope to It Takes Two. However, the name now puts Hazelight in hot water.

In a new report from Eurogamer, Hazelight has abandoned the name for It Takes Two after a claim has been filed by Take-Two Interactive. As you can gather from situation, the game and the Rockstar Games parent company share a likeness in the names and is likely the culprit for the legal decision made by Take-Two Interactive.

According to a statement from an Hazelight spokesperson, the firm “cannot comment on ongoing disputes,” but is “hopeful it will be resolved.” When visiting the United States Patent and Trademark Office page for It Takes Two, there is a document for ‘Trademark Application Expressly Abandoned’ signifying that the developer is not fighting back the claim.

More worrisome is if the changes will affect the game’s future with the reputation it received recently. For those unfamiliar, It Takes Two has been nominated for two of the largest awards for The Game Awards: Best Game Direction and Game of the Year. The new report leaves uncertainty for how the game will be received if winning these awards or will be retracted from the nomination outright thanks to the legal feud.

The story comes at no surprise with Take-Two Interactive on a continuous crusade against smaller companies that share a likeness to the firm’s owned IPs. Hazelight Studios has always pushed the basic concept of co-op to new heights with each title. It Takes Two is their latest attempt at bridging the gap between you and a friend, while using co-op to tell a story that almost everybody can relate too in some way or another.

Cody and May, are on the verge of divorce, and their daughter, Rose overhears an argument where they discuss the best way to tell her about it. She then grabs her hand made dolls that resemble her parents, and tries to fix their relationship by play acting. She then sheds a tear that shits the dolls, and like a lot of classic family adventure comedies of the 90’s, Cody and May are trapped inside the dolls and must find a way to break the spell.

They are escorted through their adventures by Dr. Hakim, and love therapy book turned sleazy love hustler who is trying to fix their relationship, much to the chagrin of Cody and May.

It Takes Two is largely dependent on the writing, because it is quite a plot-driven game, the gameplay is of course not negligible. That part is fortunately great, inventive and even more innovative than their previous co-op games. Just like A Way Out, co-op, either split screen or online, is mandatory.

Either player must choose one of the characters and together try to escape from being shrunk, and get back to their normal selves so they can get back to their lives and finalize their divorce. The game features a large variety of gameplay.

There’s a tiny bit of side-scrolling platforming, sometimes it’s a third person shooter,some puzzles come along and resemble so many classics in adventure gaming. Climbing, clambering, sneaking, riding on planes while fighting a squirrel in a fighting game style layout. As crazy as all that sounds for one game, it absolutely works.

All these different types of bolstered by their co-op implementation. There are smart moments where you really have to work together, and even sections that could just be on rails shooting are enhanced by co-op mechanics that really make both players active participants.

The best moments in It Takes Two, are when Cody and May are in the same scene, sometimes independently, sometimes together, bickering, jumping, sometimes fighting and experiencing set piece moments as a tandem.

Also fun are the various mini-games, as each stage is littered with several and thankfully, you can opt to play them from the main menu once you’ve discovered them in the story.

It Takes Two is a visual stunner. Mundane locations like a tool shed, backyard tree and a kids playhouse are brought to life with drop dead visuals and a rock solid frame-rate. Each environment itself features so much variety, and later on the locales get truly outlandish.

Overall, It Takes Two is Hazelight Studios masterpiece. A near perfect co-op experience that never gets stale, and maintains it’s excellence from start to end.

At EA Play 2020, Hazelight resurfaced with a new story, It Takes Two. Continuing on its campaign to develop impactful co-op experiences, the new game follows the story of two toys that personify the troubling relationship between a husband and wife. With an arrival scheduled for March, it was only a matter of time that the game would make it to the hands of the players.

And roughly a month later, game studio Hazelight announces It Takes Two already exceeded more than one million copies sold.

Most notably is the statement from studio director Josef Fares who asserts the lingering demand for more cooperative-based titles. “This shows that there definitely is players that also wants to play co op only games!” He continues, “Thank you everyone and I hope we see more game like this.”

Outside of the recent interaction with the success of his latest release, Fares prior feels the opposite on the naming of the Xbox Series X. That’s a f**king confusing name. Through that, studio lead Josef Fares and the rest of the Hazelight team capitalizes on the new canvas to integrate platforming and third-person adventure to a new level.

During this Thursday’s Game Awards, Fared took the stage to disclose It Takes Two will be arriving later in March 2021. You can watch the trailer that accompanied the announcement in the video below:

Similarly to A Way Out, It Takes Two will also offer a Friend Pass for every purchase of the game. Basically, it allows users to invite a friend to experience the game with them without the other player required to by the game.
