Believe it or not, but PlayStation Now for the past month did not receive a new update for titles coming to the PlayStation game-streaming service. Yes, you read that right. In March last month the firm at Sony Interactive Entertainment halted on a new announcement. Instead, the PlayStation firm unveiled the new PlayStation Plus/Now tiers coming later this June at the end of last month.

The most exciting reveal from the new subscription options includes downloading PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation Portable games. PlayStation 3 titles would require an internet connection to stream. For the last refresh of games on PlayStation Now, titles such as Grand Theft Auto: Vice City – The Definitive Edition, Little Big Workshop, Through the Darkest of Times, and Death Squared shipped in February.

Now for April, there is a new roster of games launching this week for the service. You can read the full list below:

Journey to the Savage Planet
Outer Wilds
Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood
WRC 10 FIA World Rally Championship

The plans Sony Interactive Entertainment has ahead for the new tiers coming this summer is also projected to introduce new technology to the service. Previously, a patent was uncovered online revealing that the firm would welcome PlayStation 5 games to PlayStation Now. Atop of that, the firm even pressed Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales would be a frontrunner – which it is for the service update later in June.

President & CEO Jim Ryan also presses on what to expect from the new version of PlayStation Plus/PlayStation Now. He explained unlike Xbox Game Pass, first-party releases will not be day one additions to the service. You can read the full report by heading here.

Following the impressive launch that was Journey to the Savage Planet from developer Typhoon Studios, it was no surprise at the time that Google’s Stadia Games and Entertainment decided to acquire the Montreal studio. However, it baffled many to learn that the internal first-party network would be dismantled with industry veteran Jade Raymond at the top.

During the aftermath, it was quickly issued that the decision heavily affected Typhoon Studios. In that, patchwork for Journey to the Savage Planet grew difficult since Google was current owners of the IP, which did not allow the team to work on the game. Additionally, one report also noted that the closing at the time also withheld chances for a Journey to the Savage Planet sequel as well.

But in a new announcement on Wednesday, former Typhoon Studios has now been reformed into Raccoon Logic. In addition to the unveiling, the team also obtained the rights to Journey to the Savage Planet most excitingly.

We’re super excited to continue the work we started at Typhoon Studios, and build upon the Journey to the Savage Planet franchise in the future. We would like to thank our partners at Tencent, Google, and 505 for their support. We’re fortunate to have put together an amazing team, many of whom helped build Savage Planet, and we’ve added some great new talent as well.

Reid Schneider, Raccoon Logic Studio Head

“We’re excited to be back in the indie space, making the games we truly believe in with an amazing new team,” Alex Hutchinson, Creative Director at Raccoon Logic adds. “The early investment from Tencent is a huge boost, meaning we can do significant work on our own before we start talking to publishers. We love systemic games, games with a sense of humor and a big heart, and games with strong flavours that get reactions from players. We’re going to keep pushing on those ideas and we’ll have something to show soon!”

More on now-Raccoon Logic’s Journey to the Savage Planet, Rectify Gaming sampled the game back at PAX West 2019 prior to its release. Gregory Dawes gave his experience to be “What I feel the game really delivers on is the whole co-op experience. […] Exploring with a friend really seems like it will be a blast and with upgrades applying for both of you, you won’t be left behind while your friend takes all the glory.” You can read the full feature by heading here.

In the early, and fairly young, ambitions for Google to establish some footing for Stadia Games and Entertainment, the tech conglomerate ultimately decided to pulled the plug on entire operation as Stadia now aims to offer its cloud-based infrastructure to developers in the future. As part of that, any other studios involved with the first-party developer network were also caught in the crossfire resulting with over 150 developers out of a job.

Intertwined in that, the previously acquired Typhoon Games met the same fate when the news broke at the start of February. However, what looked to be one last hoorah for the team’s latest project – Journey to the Savage Planet – was the title’s addition to Stadia Pro at the beginning of February. But, the removal of Stadia Games and Entertainment meet with a messy outcome for the title in particular.

Users on Reddit are on a campaign for issues in the game to be resolved which is later learned to be more tricky than that. Mostly, Typhoon Games is unable to perform fixes since the version is in direct ownership to Google, says one email response.

Reddit poster lordubuntu adds that the problem faced for the game is left for Google to fix mainly thanks to the firing if Typhoon Games. With Google’s history with problems on its platform, this is just another to the pile, essentially. “Please note that the publisher for Journey to the Savage Planet on Stadia is in fact Stadia Games and Entertainment (Google LLC) and, unfortunately, we have no way of assisting with this kind of issue from our end.

The email from 505 Games continues, “We suggest reaching out to Stadia support again and informing them that the publisher for the Stadia version of Journey to the Savage Planet is actually them.” This certainly isn’t the first hiccup resulting with problems on Stadia’s end on Google’s behalf as a Terraria port for the platform faced a similar fate previously when one developer called the project off completely when losing access to prominent Google accounts.

Elsewhere in the noise of the closing for Stadia Games and Entertainment, a new report from Kotaku suggests that the decision was ultimately executed after contemplating the future of the internal operation following Microsoft fulfilling its acquisition for Zenimax Media. You can read the full report by heading here.

Are you surprised by the current state of Journey to the Savage Planet on Stadia?

Typhoon Studios is set to launch their first title early next year and I had a chance to sit down for a quick demo session at PAX West 2019. Journey To The Savage Planet is the name of the game, and unlike the title would suggest, it is actually a vibrant and colorful experience. You play as an employee of Kindred Aerospace who is proud to be the 4th best interstellar exploration company currently in the industry. After getting dropped on a planet far from civilization, you are tasked with finding out if it is habitable for human life. After quickly discovering that’s not the case, you and a friend will set forth to explore and cleanse the planet of it’s strange alien life while getting some loot in the process.

Upon starting my demo, the first thing I noticed was how colorful and cheerful the game looked. Alien life and fauna all have a nice mix of wild color schemes and really add to the feel of being on an uncharted planet. The game also has a very cartoony look to it, something that I think complements it’s style really well. Journey to the Savage Planet seems to be going for a more whimsical take on things rather than the usual gloom and doom, which is refreshing to see. That’s not to say that the alien life won’t annihilate you given the chance. I spotted all sorts of creatures during my demo, some flying around, some chasing me on foot, some with special ways to take them down. For example, one enemy needed a certain goo found on a nearby plant to be thrown at it first before it could take damage otherwise.

A whole arsenal of tools is available for you to play around with on your adventure. Bait was available to lure enemies to a certain spot which I used in conjunction with a sort of gooey grenade and my energy pistol weapon. A grappling hook and double jump made traversing floating islands fun and easy. That was just the beginning as I didn’t get to play around with everything at my disposal. In addition, upgrades can be bought at your home base by using materials found during your adventure and can be shared between players if in a co-op session. I was told that some things can’t be accessed without getting certain items or upgrades which gives the game a sort of Metroidvania feel which I am a huge fan of. Going back and finding something that was previously unavailable is always a rewarding experience and hopefully the game can deliver more on that.

What I feel the game really delivers on is the whole co-op experience. Too many games feel as though co-op is added as an afterthought, whereas here it feels like it was designed in mind with co-op. Exploring with a friend really seems like it will be a blast and with upgrades applying for both of you, you won’t be left behind while your friend takes all the glory. Finding secrets and completing objectives in co-op was already really fun in my 30 minute demo, and I can’t wait to see more when the game releases.

Journey to the Savage Planet is planned for release on Xbox One, Playstation 4, and Epic Games Store on January 28th, 2020.
