Reaching ten year since the official debut for League of Legends has pushed developer Riot Games to break from their comfort zone and pursue new games within the same universe of their popular MOBA. Sharing the platform for the announcement of inspired fighting game Project L, the studio was also hiding Project F which alike the fighter, is a new title taking influence from League and creating a new experience from the source material.

Given the same amount of stage time with literally seconds of visible gameplay for anticipated fans to see, there is little to any information on where this new title will be heading. However, through the compilation of developers discussing their time with video games, some did shed light on Project F: while these team members were not referenced primarily, their statements still hold up to be legitimate.

Even though we all love League of Legends, I think we also all love to imagine the possibility of, “What would it be like to run around and explore the world of Runeterra?” How could we enable experiences for players to go explore with their friends?

Another employee at Riot that is involved with the new title gave the analogy of visiting Disneyland and “getting to actually walk around and explore a space that you know really well feels so magical.” Ultimately opening the universe of League of Legends for players to fully enwrap themselves in as they play and interact with the world around them.

Discussion on when or where Project F will be available has yet to be disclosed following its brief announcement.

Developer Riot Games has been persistent when it comes to the currently standing MOBA giant League of Legends, however, the team is also looking to expand the universe to other genres that applies to the hardcore fan base that has formed over the past decade. Announced during the 10 year anniversary for League of Legends, Riot revealed that Project L will be the studio’s entry to the fighting game genre.

While Project L might be news to many, it is however a dated reveal as Riot has shared to have disclosed the coming project back at EVO back in August during the annual Las Vegas event. Developer Radiant Entertainment, who will be developing the coming fighter, the studio’s CEO Tom Cannon discusses what the team expects for players to see from the new title.

“What I think League of Legends players expect from this game is different, but in some ways harmonious from what I think fighting game players expect from this game,” Cannon shares when discussing Project L. “Everyone wants a great game, but what we’ve been seeing is that people are really excited to see Runterran champions in a new light, even from a new camera angle. Making fighting games is really, really tough.”

Regarding the actual game itself, Riot did showcase only a few seconds of gameplay for fans to see from the “Making Games” developer diary for the League of Legends decade anniversary. Looking from the short clip, the only confirmed characters is Darius and Ahri: but seeing that this is early development footage, expect more characters to be announced later down the line. Cannon then goes to share that the team will be “going dark” following the gamepaly teaser, so more information on the game will be disclosed to those who patiently wait for when the studio is ready to share more.

Speaking of franchised titles under the League of Legends universe, Riot games announced that strategic autobattler Teamfight Tactics will be making its way to mobile. You can read our coverage on the announcement here.

Would you play a fighter comprised of League of Legends characters?

Project L does not have any listed platforms nor a secure release date.

Fans of the popular MOBA on PC have indulged in League of Legends for roughly a decade now since the game’s debut back in 2009, and now it looks that the planets are finally aligning for the game to be making its journey to other platforms. This year’s League of legends 10 year celebration has birthed League of Legends: Wild Rift, a new version of the game players are already familiar with that have been crafted from scratch to adapt to console and mobile systems.

Wild Rift’s Executive Producer Michael Chow shares that the new project is a challenge that Riot Games has been looking to overtake for several years and felt that the team in finally satisfied with how the new game has came out for other systems. Clarifying that this new version of League of Legends is not a simple port to console, rather a newly crafted iteration of the fan-favorite title with omens that still hold true to the experience players on PC already have.

Chow then goes into detail when referencing the game’s learning curve and amount of time the title takes for players to full enjoy the game’s universe among the cast of characters and tactical team-based gameplay: he emphasizes that Wild Rift will fancy towards newcomers of the game by hosting 15-20 minute matches and an intuitive control scheme for both controllers & touch screen interfaces.

“We spent a long time making sure this will be a true League of Legend’s experience that’s worthy of devoting your precious game time,” Chow says about Wild Rift. Adding on to how soon players can get involved, Chow announces that a slew of playtests composed of alphas and betas will go live later this year in a picked regions for the time being. Of course, more regions can expect their own respected tests down the line leading into 2020.

Speculating on the aimed launch sometime next year, the chances of seeing League of Legends debut for consoles could also seep to the next generation of hardware as well. While not specifically gone into detail, the timing seems to be fairly aligned for the chances to be plausible.

Similar to the recent mobile announcement for Teamfight Tactics, Riot Games already has pre-registration for Wild Rift available on the Google Play store, which you can visit by going here.

League of Legends: Wild Rift will be available for consoles and mobile sometime in 2020.

The expansive universe that is within Riot Games’ League of Legends is no surprise when seeing that the globally popular MOBA would seep into other genres of video games eventually. Fans of the near decade old series witness this when the developer revealed Teamfight Tactics which later released this past Summer on PC. And just that is now set to arrive as Riot Games announced via the League of Legends 10 year celebration that the strategy autobattler have been announced for both iOS and Android versions.

In welcoming the two new platforms to the Teamfight Tactics party, Riot announced that upon official launch of the game on both Google Play and the App Store will trigger cross play for players to initiate battles with any owner of the game. Alongside the upcoming ports for the new title, the team also revealed that seasonal sets will be put into effect in less than a month. A demonstration event featuring six video game titles was one of the highlights in the recently concluded 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia. Despite the cringe of some Olympic purists, the event was a success and has somewhat provided an overview of which country to look out for when it debuts as a medal event in the upcoming 2022 Games in Hangzhou, China.

Asian Games Esports Titles

China took home two gold medals after dominating League of Legends and Arena of Valor.  South Korea as expected reigned supreme at the Starcraft II event.  Japan also got a piece of the pie after beating Iran in Pro Evolution Soccer 18, Indonesia for Clash Royale and Hong Kong for Hearthstone.

Despite the success of the event, there is still a lot of skepticism about the topic of Esports as part of the Olympics, with the argument that the discipline itself is not considered as a sport. By definition, the skeptics are correct since Sports is defined as “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.”

IOC

As far as definitions are concerned, Chess which pretty much resembles Esports was already recognized by the International Olympic Committee as a proper sport. Anywho, Esports does not need to be recognition from the IOC to succeed in the competitive scene, in fact, the inclusion of Esports in the Olympic may even be more beneficial to the IOC than to the discipline itself.  The Asian Games Federation’s decision to include Esports as one of their medal events will not only entice more audience but will also provide an opportunity for those who were not blessed with physical strength/agility to represent their country in one of the biggest competitive stages on the planet.

In a long, close, 45 minute game between Renegades and Team Dignitas, Renegades banned Corki, Elise, and Kindred. Dignitas chose Kalista, Gangplank, and Lulu. Renegades did take the win over Dignitas, despite both teams losing two players each very early on with 13 kills, to Dignitas’ 17. Renegades remain seated 10th, with Dignitas in 9th.
