Already, three months into 2024 is almost behind us. And with the turning of each page on the calendar, so is for a new batch of titles for PlayStation Plus. In January, the free titles consisted of A Plague Tale: Requiem, Evil West, Nobody Saves The World; February with Foamstars, Rollerdrome, Steelrising; March featuring Sifu, EA Sports F1 23, Hello Neighbor 2, Destiny 2: Witch Queen.

And, of course, the game catalog lineups were equally satisfying. Offering Tiny Tina’s Wonderland, Resident Evil 2, Just Cause 3 in January. Then Need For Speed Unbound, Tales Of Arise, The Outer Worlds in February. And then with the most recent batch headlining Marvel’s Midnight Suns, Lego DC Supervillains.

Now with April just on the horizon, Sony Interactive Entertainment has already mapped out the next trio of free titles for PlayStation Plus owners. Next month, Immortals of Aveum, Minecraft Legends, and Skul: The Hero Slayer will all be available to install at no extra cost for all PlayStation Plus members.

From a preview of the Immortals of Aveum, Rectify Gaming wrote: “Immortals of Aveum is a single player, story driven shooter, and the laser focus comes across with the level of polish on display. Furthermore, despite the Call of Duty background, my lasting thoughts on the entirety of the game resembled an older, but beloved EA classic.”

Another feature we did was on Skul: The Hero Slayer back at PAX East 2020. “An alternative approach which still has the theme [Rogue-lite] as a basis, but redirects how you would expect the story to be told.” You can read the full piece by heading here.

Which title has you most excited to play first?

Immortals of Aveum, Minecraft Legends, and Skul: The Hero Slayer will be available for PlayStation Plus from April 2, 2024 to May 6, 2024.

For more than a decade, Minecraft has and still remains one of the most popular releases to ever hit the industry. Even overtaking Tetris in most copies sold, it begs the question to if it cannot do anything. Recently, Minecraft even started to shake Hollywood announcing that it has casted Jack Black to star as Steve in the new Jared Hess-directed film from Warner Bros. The Minecraft movie is scheduled to release in April 2025.

Additionally, Minecraft has also grabbed some attention in late 2023 with its annual Minecraft Live event. During that, the yearly Mob Vote came and it left players to decide what will be the next creature coming to the base game. For 2023, users vote the armadillo to be added to Minecraft. Earlier in 2023, Mojang Studios also launched Minecraft Legends – a new tower-defense strategy game within the Minecraft universe.

However, despite being short of its first birthday, Mojang Studios in its latest blog post reveals that Minecraft Legends isn’t planning to be supported anymore. This follows the latest Lost legend, Snow vs Snouts which features a new combat style added to the full game.

Since launch, we’ve listened to community feedback and implemented a series of changes and tweaks to make the game better. With that complete, we’re now going to take a step back from development. While we won’t be releasing any new content (i.e. updates, Lost Legends, or Marketplace DLC) for Minecraft Legends, the fun doesn’t stop here. We’ll continue having a blast playing the game alongside our community because those rowdy piglins are showing no signs of slowing down.

Our existing Lost Legends challenges will remain available for free, and you’ll still be able to reap the rewards if you claim victory. We will of course continue to offer technical support to players, and we won’t be removing any functionalities or features from the game. PvP and co-op will also remain fully functional, so you can continue playing whether you prefer to take on the piglins by yourself or battle alongside (or against) friends.

Cristina Anderca, Mojang Studios Senior Creative Writer

“We’ve been working hard together with Blackbird Interactive to bring improvements and new features to Minecraft Legends based on your feedback. With Minecraft Legends, we took a completely new approach to gameplay, so much so that we had to make up a new genre for it (kind of): action strategy. Our community has always helped us shape our games and that’s something we value greatly, especially when launching a completely new game,” the post adds.

“Thank you for following along this heroic journey and helping us make Minecraft Legends the game it is today. With the support of our team, our partners, and the Minecraft community, we’re going to continue exploring the types of games we’re passionate about and bringing new experiences to the Minecraft universe.

“Together, we united the Overworld, made some adorably scary friends, and most importantly, showed those piglins that they messed with the wrong dimension, again and again. Keep your banners raised because the Overworld will always need a hero!” This follows the previous shutter of support for Minecraft Dungeons which came back in October 2023. When Mojang officially popped onto the map with Minecraft, the game as we know now swelled in popularity which later opened to the $2 billion acquisition of the Swedish game studio. Of course, the team as it continued to further support the game also issued more content with free updates over the years. And this continued when Minecraft Dungeons entered the mix.

Now, players can further explore the universe established over a decade ago with new experiences as players clear out dungeons across the multiple biomes that each is inspired by. And, this was yet another sign of the times with Minecraft Legends also on the horizon. Mojang Studios made the announcement last year in 2022 with a next year release window bringing excitement to returning players.

With the new tower defense project, players can further explore what capabilities Minecraft has to offer when mending into other genres. At the Wednesday-held Developer_Direct, Minecraft Legends was revealed to ship this March. You can watch the gameplay trailer in the video below:

“Legends is a bold new direction for the series, taking all the blocks, mobs, diamond swords and more that you know from the survival classic, and transforming them into a fully-fledged action strategy game,” Xbox Wire editor-in-chief Joe Skrebels writes. Even more is that the footage presents some of the multiplayer components that will be present in the full game as well.

“Alongside a story-led campaign in which you reclaim the Overworld from a Piglin invasion, you’ll also be able to take part in 4v4 battles against your friends, enemies, and frenemies.” That is not all for Minecraft as a film adaptation is still underway over in Hollywood. In that, Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess is said to be attached with Jason Mamoa (Aquaman) to be involved too. You can read the full report by heading here.

Are you planning to play Minecraft Legends at release?

When it comes to developer Mojang Studios, it is a good guess the game studio is working on Minecraft. Even when the team is not occupied with the decade-old release, Minecraft is still the foundation for the team’s next project. Look at Minecraft Dungeons: set within the confines of the pixelate universe, the developer pushes the boundaries of its formula with a dungeon crawler experience.

In recent weeks, new information has come in terms of the IP. From The Ankler, the live-action film is still taking form with Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess joining the production with Jason Mamoa (Aquaman) reported to star. Additionally, Minecraft just released The Wild Update which welcomes the new Deep Dark and improved swamp biome as well.

At the Xbox + Bethesda Showcase on Sunday, Mojang Studios reveals its newest project – Minecraft Legends. You can watch the reveal trailer in the video below:

“In Minecraft Legends, players will discover a gentle land, both familiar and mysterious, full of lush biomes and rich resources. But this beautiful land is on the brink of terrible change – the piglin invasion has begun and threatens to corrupt the Overworld,” explains Dennis Ries, Executive Producer for Minecraft Legends.

“It´s up to the player to make unexpected friends (including some classic mobs you’ll recognize from Minecraft) to form valuable alliances and lead the way into strategic battles against the fierce invaders from the Nether. The game will have a very exciting campaign that will introduce many surprises for both new and seasoned Minecraft player alike. And for those looking to play with friends, there will be online campaign co-op and competitive multiplayer.”

He adds, “To deliver our vision as an action strategy game, we knew we needed to partner with a team that could help us bring Minecraft Legends to life in the best way possible. We are thrilled to partner with Blackbird Interactive, a development team with a long track record of delivering strong strategy gameplay experiences.”

Do you have any excitement for Minecraft Legends?

Minecraft Legends is said to ship sometime in 2023 for Xbox, PlayStation, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
