Roughly a year ago, Sega of America in its effort to establish unionization roots for its employees also ended its relationship with some of its talent. As part of The Allied Employees Guild Improving SEGA (AEGIS) arrangement with the Communication Workers of America (CWA), it was revealed that Relic Entertainment has been sold off by Sega as it then pursued its own independent venture.

For the developer best known for popular real-time strategy releases like Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, Company of Heroes, and Age of Empires IV, the plans is not to close shop. In a recent press release, the Canadian developer has laid out a map of prospects for its future projects and intents moving forward for Relic Entertainment.

You can view the three focal points for Relic Entertainment’s new initiative below:

  • Deepening Commitment to Existing Titles: Relic will continue to provide robust support for its acclaimed titles, including Company of Heroes 3 which just announced a new DLC and a major update. Relic is committed to ongoing updates, and community engagement to ensure a thriving and long-lasting experience for players.
  • Independent Development, creative experiences: Recognizing the power of creativity and innovation, Relic will actively pursue the development and publishing of smaller-scope, in-house games, while also continuing to develop the larger, complex strategy titles the studio is renowned for. This will allow the studio to explore new genres and gameplay experiences and continue fostering a culture of experimentation and artistic expression.
  • Re-imagining Classics: Drawing upon its rich catalog of beloved games, Relic will explore opportunities to bring these classic titles to modern audiences. This may include re-releases, remasters, or brand-new franchise experiences that capture the spirit of the originals while appealing to a new generation of players.

“Relic Entertainment has always been a studio defined by its resilience and passion for creating unforgettable gaming experiences. This new chapter marks a significant milestone for us. By embracing independence and focusing on our core strengths, we are confident in our ability to deliver innovative, high-quality games that will resonate with players around the world. The future of Relic Entertainment is bright, and we are excited to embark on this new journey,” CEO Justin Downdeswell says.

Paired with the recent commitment organized by Relic Entertainment, the team is also working on a new release aimed for this summer, Earth vs Mars. “Martians have been visiting Earth for decades, abducting animals and humans and harvesting their atomic essence to create bizarre Martian-creature hybrids. This time they’re here to claim our planet,” the synopsis on Steam reads.

Although aiming to ship later in 2025, Relic Entertainment does confirm it is only a PC release currently. However, reception could introduce the game to more platforms. “For launch, we are focused on releasing Earth vs Mars on Steam (PC), however based on the game’s reception, we may consider other platforms in the future.” Also, Steam Deck is not planned to face support upon release for Earth vs Mars.
