Some of the internal decisions from Sony Interactive Entertainment continues to puzzle its user base. After more than a decade as the perceived platform mascot, it appears that the PlayStation firm is throwing the shade over Sackboy. This was understood upon discovering that the character was suddenly removed from the PlayStation Productions intro for its latest film, Until Dawn. But, there are other choices that also confuses players.
In 2022, Sony Interactive Entertainment introduced its ‘PlayStation Stars’ program which rewarded users with digital collectibles to gather from your playtime. There was also real currency value that could be redeemed for items on the PlayStation Store. In October 2024, the firm removed the option to redeem for its subscriptions which many players were upset to discover.
This week in a new PlayStation Blog post, it is announced that the PlayStations Stars program is to be scrapped later this fall. The decision was said to go into effect on November 2nd, 2026. Currently, the program is no longer accepting new members and pre-existing members can continue to earn points & rewards through PlayStation Stars.
“At Sony Interactive, we’re always experimenting with new and exciting ways to bring our community of players together to share the joys of gaming and create lasting memories. That’s why three years ago, we created PlayStation Stars, a loyalty program to celebrate our players,” said network advertising, loyalty & licensed merchandise vice president Grace Chen.
“Since launching the program, we’ve learned a lot from evaluating the types of activities our players respond best to, and as a company, we are always evolving with player and industry trends. Through this evaluation, we have decided to refocus our efforts and will be winding down the current version of PlayStation Stars. We will continue to evaluate our key findings from this program, and are looking into ways to build upon these learnings.”
As noted, users can still access main functions for PlayStation Stars and that will be active until July 23rd later this summer. It is also disclosed that users will still be able to view & access their digital collectibles following the proper shuttering for PlayStation Stars. Are you upset by this decision from Sony Interactive Entertainment?
