More than a week ago during the PlayStation 5 showcase, Sony ended the livestreamed event by featuring what the coming next-generation console would look like. Unique in its own way, the approaching iteration of PlayStation shares its tall stature with Microsoft’s Xbox Series X as both are advertised to stand up. However, the reveal took many by surprise with the reveal for a discless console as well.
During the concluding trailer, Sony unveiled the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition. This unit in particular would not offer the Blu-ray UHD disc drive that the standard PlayStation 5 offers at retail. Instead, players will be able to own a unit without the necessity of physical copies of titles and rely on a virtual library that is collected on the respected users PlayStation Network account.
Following the initial reveal, Sony Interactive Entertainment President & CEO Jim Ryan commented on the background of the console and why Sony decided to pursue a discless PlayStation 5. Ryan explains the factor that swayed the firm to create the unit is based off users that by games exclusively though digital format.
But many of our many of our consumers are purchasing solely digitally these days. We thought that we would do what we typically try and do, and just offer choice.
When speaking with BBC on the topic, the outlet questioned if there would be a price difference for the Digital Edition compared to the PlayStation 5 equipped with a disc drive. Where Ryan responded by sharing no price for the systems will be spared at that time.
Even more on the announcement of the second console, there were no traces of Sony’s ambitions to ship a disc-free system this generation. It’s actually the contrary as Microsoft has several reports of a digital-focused unit dubbed ‘Lockhart’ earlier on. The latter Xbox was issued a report from Windows Central disclosing the titling for the system to be ‘Xbox Series S’ and offer 4 teraflops in contrast to the 12 for the beefier iteration.
However, while the coming generation of Xbox is backed by backwards compatibility and Smart Delivery, Sony’s efforts is slimmer on the other side. It was reported recently that the firm’s approach at cross-gen purchases is left in the hands of the publisher to support the feature rather than the individual team responsible for developing the game.
