For roughly the past decade many players have been longing for the BioWare of before. From both the Mass Effect & Dragon Age franchises, there has only been more disappointment on its recent line of delivered titles. Just this past February, the shortcoming of Dragon Age: The Veilguard resulted in layoffs as development transitions to the next Mass Effect project.

Before that, Anthem was truly the thing that broke the spirit for fans of the studio. And although BioWare has promised to undo the damage from that title, many are still waiting to be met with that sentiment. Anthem was so volatile to the BioWare name that some of its legendary leadership left the developer. In 2021, game director Jonathan Warner announced his departure roughly a decade after working at BioWare.

Now in 2025, BioWare has a new update for Anthem. Come January 2026, the servers for the game will be shut down. More detrimental is that online servers are the foundation for Anthem being an online-only experience and will leave the title unplayable once it lobbies are closed.

“We have an important update to share regarding Anthem. After careful consideration, we will be sunsetting Anthem on January 12, 2026. This means that the game will still be playable online for the next 180+ days. As of today, you can no longer purchase in-game premium currency, but you can still use your remaining balance until the servers go offline,” BioWare writes.

In the FAQ, the studio elaborates on why the game will not be playable after the action. “Anthem was designed to be an online-only title so once the servers go offline, the game will no longer be playable.” Adding: “Over the course of the next 180+ days Anthem will still be playable online and you can use the last of your in-game premium currency as we prepare to sunset the game’s live servers on January 13, 2026.”
