The most recent releases from PlayStation have started a pattern of shortcomings. Earlier in March, Marathon officially shipped. And while the game does deliver on promises from Bungie, the its sales performance has remained stagnant. The PlayStation firm addressed despite that, it will continue to support the live-service. Additionally, Housemarque’s Saros is also selling less than its predecessor Returnal as well which does not level out the spending on its development.

But, there are heavy hitters on the way from other teams within Sony Interactive Entertainment. The Last of Us developer Naughty Dog is set to ship Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. However, the game is still a ways off reported to ship after this year at the earliest. In 2025, the team did acknowledge fan interest in another The Last of Us, but did share no current plans for another entry currently.

So while development is ramping up for Naughty Dog once again, the question that still remains is how much time can the team continue to use for these extended windows. It should be worth noting the studio has not released a major new entry for this entire console cycle; The Last of Us Part II shipped before the PlayStation 5 in 2020. On Bluesky, Jason Schreier revealed that PlayStation is not happy with the wait.

Oh they definitely have an issue with that

Jason Schreier (@jasonschreier.bsky.social) 2026-05-22T00:19:01.628Z

The last project that Naughty Dog was chiseling away at was its live-service Faction II project. The developer in 2023 was eager to ship the game, even asking for more patience from its fans. Despite that, the title was shuttered internally. In an interview with former PlayStation Studios head Shuhei Yoshida, he revealed Bungie offered perspective on the live-service model which resulted in Naughty Dog pulling the plug upon realizing the cost to deliver.

So while the game will not likely release until 2027, there is still a decent chance that fans might get a new look at Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet very soon. Next month, a PlayStation State of Play presentation will be taking place with the duration of the showcase being over an hour long. You can read the full report by heading here.

More than a year ago, many fans were bewildered that Naughty Dog would remaster 2020’s The Last of Us Part II so soon. In our review, Rectify Gaming scored it a 9/10. “The added visual flares and technical improvements are the cherries on top, but the addictive No Return roguelike mode among intimate commentary and pre-alpha levels are what make this the definitive sequel experience.”

Additionally, Sony Interactive Entertainment & Naughty Dog also rolled out the more recent ‘Complete Edition’ which bundled the latest versions of The Last of Us for PlayStation 5 earlier this spring. But looking forward, that is where it appears to stop. When speaking to Variety, game director Neil Druckmann told that there are no plans to explore a third installment for The Last of Us.

This week, a new update has rolled out for The Last of Us Part II Remastered. Equipped with it comes a new ‘chronological’ mode that reshuffles the plot points of both Ellie & Abby in sequential order to deliver a more cohesive story for the 2020 release. The update also ships with new trophies to unlock as well which is a nice garnish.

“Through the new Chronological mode, we believe players will gain even deeper insight into Part II’s narrative. Players will be able to see how Ellie being gifted a guitar flows so neatly into her learning to play, for example, while the journey through Seattle will showcase the fascinating parallels between Ellie and Abby’s crisscrossing journeys. You’ll see just how close they come into running into each other, how their actions impact each other, and more,” editorial content manager Jonathon Dornbush writes.

“Those who have already played will know its story is told non-linearly, as Ellie and Abby’s motivations, realizations, and emotional stakes unfold across myriad flashbacks and present-day storylines. While this structure is very intentional and core to how our studio wanted Part II’s themes and narrative beats to impact players, we always wondered what it would be like to experience this story chronologically. And now finally, we can answer that question.”

When it came to video game adaptations, the skewed viewpoint of not being proper film or television was shifted came the release of HBO’s The Last of Us. It opened with record viewership back in 2023 and was instantly greenlit for another season before the second episode even aired. The show did go on to win 8 Oscars later that year.

As for the latest season, it also was met with viewer count higher than season one; 5.3 million. Additionally, HBO of course also gave the green flag for another season. According to writer Craig Mazin, he said that four seasons is essential to complete the story. “There’s no way to complete this narrative in a third season. Hopefully, we’ll earn our keep enough to come back and finish it in a fourth.”

And with pre-production hardly underway for season three, there has been a new shake up behind the scenes. Via a post on X, Naughty Dog confirms that Neil Druckmann is to exit the production moving forward. Druckmann who directed The Last of Us Part II stood as an executive producer on the show since its inception.

“I’ve made the difficult decision to step away from my creative involvement in The Last of Us on HBO,” Druckmann’s statement in the letterhead reads. With work completed on season 2 and before any meaningful work starts on season 3, now is the right time for me to transition my complete focus to Naughty Dog and its future projects, including writing and directing our exciting next game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, along with my responsibilities as Studio Head and Head of Creative.”

Now with Druckmann out of the picture, Mazin is to helm full creative control on The Last of Us for season three. In a previous interview with SciFiNow, he told the outlet that the show would be his final effort in video game adaptations. “Well, I’m not ever going to, of course, because where can you go from here? […] I would love to help produce some good adaptations of video games, just a couple in mind that I actually have.”

Mazin continues: “But in terms of writing and dedicating myself on a day-by-day basis… this one’s my video game swansong.” In terms of where the series can go, Druckmann has previously confirmed that there are no plans to make a third installment for The Last of Us. So, a project beyond season four, if it were to be realized, would likely not come without Druckmann attached. You can read the full report by heading here.

While developer Naughty Dog is recognized for its masterclass work on IPs like Uncharted & The Last of Us, the firm has been coined as a re-release studio for some time now. This year alone is releasing two versions of its latest release, The Last of Us Part II. Later in April, The 2020 release officially hits PC. And in July it will be bundled with The Last of Us Part I in a ‘The Last of Us Complete: Collector’s Edition’ bundle this coming summer.

As for new on The Last of Us, it appears that the developer might officially be done with the IP entirely for expanding its universe. Game director Neil Druckmann told Variety that plans for another sequel is not in the works at Naughty Dog. What is, however, on the way is an entirely new IP – Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Tati Gabrielle stars in the new project after her work previous with Naughty Dog.

What is unknown about the game is the planned release for Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. From its initial announcement, there was no confirmed understanding on when the game will be available. But according to Jason Schreier on ResetEra, the game is not aiming to release in 2026 as many were hoping to be the case.

Schreier in response in a thread said: “I’m pretty sure I said they were both going to be very early teases. Neither of those games will be out next year.” This comes after the recent new information that emerged on The Witcher IV. During an investors call, CD Projekt Red confirmed the game is aiming to launch after 2026 as well.

For those looking for a nearing release, there is one long-promised title that was reported to ship this year. After its initial teaser in 2021, Quantic Dream announced its new project prematurely – Star Wars Eclipse. InsiderGaming did a follow-up in 2023 sharing that internal projections expect the title to arrive in 2026. You can read the full report by heading here.

Come this June will mark the five-year anniversary for The Last of Us Part II. While controversial in its choice of story, the game went on to dethrone The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt as the most awarded release. Our review for the PlayStation 5 version touts: “might not be the remaster that players have asked for, but surely one that everyone can appreciate.”

Although there has been radio silence on the state of the series for a new release, Naughty Dog was initially working on a multiplayer experience – Factions II. It was discovered recently that comments by Bungie gave Naughty Dog cold feet to further pursue a live-service game. The team since then have continued to pursue its new IP Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, it announced in December.

And with plans to release shaping for April 2025 for season 2 of the HBO television series, Neil Druckmann speaking to Variety reveals that the current roadmap for The Last of Us Part III might not be properly realized. “I guess the only thing I would say is don’t bet on there being more of ‘Last of Us.’ This could be it,” Druckmann says.

Despite the team just canceling its live-service and kickstarting its new IP, there has been no established plans for The Last of Us Part III. In the past, Druckmann did share a prequel title was drafted for the universe. But, it was instead repurposed into an episode for the HBO series in season 1, ‘Look for the Light’.

On the topic of questioning the direction for The Last of Us, the same conversation was recently spun for the TV show. With HBO confident in at least four seasons, the basis that three season will be inspired by the 2020 title will be interesting if that is how the firm pursues the show moving forward. You can read the full report by heading here.

Are you convinced The Last of Us Part II is the conclusion for the series?

For the past few years, the build up for PlayStation’s live-service initiatives is slowly being dismantled. Following the upsetting release of Concord – and the subsequent closure of its developer – more & more titles have been closed and redirected towards other means. Currently, there are two titles on the way for release still – Marathon & Fairgames$.

But, the cancelation list is much taller. In January, it was reported that two live-service titles centered around both God of War and an untitled Bend Studio project were shuttered internally at PlayStation Studios. Additionally, it was also reported that a Horizon MMO title was also relinquished as well in January. The most notorious is still Naughty Dog’s Factions II project.

According to the now-departed Shuhei Yoshida, the former PlayStation Studios head told that Factions II was very enjoyable. However, despite his praise, the team did take comments from Bungie to ultimately pull the plug on the effort; PushSquare transcribes from his interview with SacredSymbols.

“The idea for The Last of Us Online came from Naughty Dog and they really wanted to make it. But Bungie explained [to them] what it takes to make live service games, and Naughty Dog realised, ‘Oops, we can’t do that! If we do it, we can’t make Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.’ So that was a lack of foresight.” Yoshida does elaborate that the approach initially for Factions II was on Naughty Dogs’ behalf and not a mandate from leadership.

“From my experience, when studios see the company has a big initiative, [they realise] riding on that gives them a better chance of getting a project approved and supported. It’s not like [current PS Studios boss Hermen Hulst] is telling teams they need to make live service games, it’s likely mutual.” Yoshida simply bookends the discussion by stating, “Yeah, it sucks,” towards the growing number of canceled titles in the vein of live-service at PlayStation.

Are you surprised by this outlook from Yoshida on PlayStation live-service?

For the current time being, there is little understanding what Naughty Dog is currently pursuing for its next title. Previously, the developer was working on a multiplayer title set within its The Last of Us series. Back in fall 2023, the team asked for more patience on the new title underway. That was until the game was ultimately canceled instead in December 2023.

Outside of its attempt at a standalone multiplayer title, Naughty Dog has remained busy with remastering its latest releases. The Last of Us Part II Remastered release on PlayStation 5 earlier this winter. Rectify Gaming scored the game a 9/10. Additionally, Naughty Dog before that ported The Last of Us Part I to PC as well.

Now, while the ongoing direction Naughty Dog is heading is unclear, there is one certainty among it all: Troy Baker. The voice actor who has become a hallmark in the industry and more specifically associated with Naughty Dog is to return for the next game. In an interview with GQ Magazine, it is revealed that Baker will be featured in the next project – whatever that may be.

“In a heartbeat I would always work with Troy,” Niel Druckmann, Naughty Dog studio head shared with the publication. It is unsure if Baker’s involvement extends to more within The Last of Us series or he will instead be part of a new franchise altogether. Baker next year in 2025 will be featured in Ken Levine’s next project, Judas – a successor to his original IP Bioshock.

Again, there is no one certainty to what Naughty Dog is working on. But what many fans speculate is that perhaps Uncharted might not be on the table. Speaking to Buzzfeed, Druckmann did confirm that the last game – Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End – was a good sendoff for the series. You cam read the full report by heading here.

What do you hope the next Naughty Dog game will be?

Excitement for PlayStation’s The Last of Us does not cease to simmer in the near future. Just this past year, the HBO television series aired bringing some of the most-successful airings for content on then-HBO Max. Additionally, the show was already greenlit for a second season alongside a new effort expecting the follow-up starring Bella Ramsey & Pedro Pascal to arrive by spring 2025 next year.

What’s more, casting has already kicked off for the new season. Of course, the path the story is following includes Abby who has Kaitlyn Dever (Last Man Standing, Next Goal Wins) casted for the role. In a Rectify Gaming exclusive, there are also new set images from the set for The Last of Us season 2 that share just some of the new settings the new season will explore.

Now with time leading up to the season airing or even just the first trailer for season 2, a new development has surfaced on The Last of Us. From Dealabs, the French publication reports that a PC version for The Last of Us Part II Remastered is already being realized over at PlayStation. Just this year The Last of Us Part II Remastered arrived to PlayStation 5 in January.

Going into specifics, it appears that Sony Interactive Entertainment is already sitting on a finished product; that is according to sources internally. The claim goes in corroboration with leaker Silknigth. Last month, the user hinted at God of War Ragnarok being ported to Steam. And in the most recent State of Play showcase, a release date for September was confirmed for the PC port.

Howbeit, the user was denounced on multiple other claims by Bloomberg Tech writer Jason Schreier. As a result, Silknigth did shutter the X profile altogether. What Dealabs does indicate though is that the port for The Last of Us Part II Remastered is already finished as of fall 2023. Now it appears that Sony is waiting for the right opportunity to ship this PC release.

One indicator for its decision is found with season 1. At the time, the show aired alongside the release of The Last of Us Part I on PC. So it is entirely possible season 2 could face The Last of Us Part II Remastered launching then. You can read the initial report by heading here.

Are you hoping The Last of Us Part II Remastered comes to PC?

Overlooking towards developer Naughty Dog, the PlayStation Studios team remains silent on its next major project. While we do understand the team has already restructured for its upcoming blockbuster, single-player title, the team is also multitasking. In that, the developer revealed previously that a multiplayer portion for The Last of Us Part II is on the way as well.

Not to mention the recent success of the HBO television series for The Last of Us, Naughty Dog has proven to have a full plate for itself. Although details are up in the air for what Naughty Dog is occupied with primarily, many argue if it’s Uncharted or not. Despite the continued success of the series, lead Neil Druckmann explained the conclusion for Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End satisfied the team.

Amid the wait for the upcoming The Last of Us multiplayer spin-off, Naughty Dog confirms the wait will be longer until more is release on the project and also the game shipping on store shelves. You can view the statement in the tweet below:

“We know many of you have been looking forward to hearing more about our The Last of Us multiplayer game. We’re incredibly proud of the job our studio has done thus far, but as development has continued, we’ve realized what is best for the game is to give it more time,” the letterhead reads. “Our team will continue to work on the project, as well as our other games in development, including a brand new single-player experience; we look forward to sharing more soon.”

The statement does come at a surprise for many. However, after the game’s absence at the recent PlayStation Showcase, it does make sense since the title was anticipated to make an appearance. Instead, live-service PlayStation titles such as Fairgame$, Marathon, and Condor were revealed.

As many are familiar online, HBO’s The Last of Us show has proven to be a movement not only for modern entertainment, but also in the tense for video game adaptations as well. Since its airing back in January, the television series has already broken records – even on HBO Max being the platform’s second-biggest debut ever. Not to mention also being greenlit for a second season so suddenly as well.

Additionally, Neil Druckmann who directed The Last of Us Part II and co-wrote the HBO TV show went on the verify that the next season will not be the entirety of the sequel. Instead, he and writer Craig Mazin when speaking to GQ confirmed there will be a season three which continues the story from the 2020 title.

However, Druckmann in a separate interview when speaking to Kinda Funny Games now reveals there was other projects planned that would tie into the live-action show. Closing out the discussion, Druckmann explains a previous effort to adapt a prequel title prior to the original 2013 title which featured a character from the finale of the TV show – and to be developed outside of Naughty Dog. You can watch the segment in the video below (57:33):

SPOILERS: Contents of the final episode for The Last of Us is discussed ahead

In that, Druckmann explains the opening to Episode ‘Look for the Light’ featured the birth of Ellie and a glimpse at her mother casted with original Ellie voice actor Ashley Johnson. The story was planned to be a game of its own at one point. “I’m reminded now actually cause I’ve talked about it in an interview now – there was a much more full version of this story that went more back in time that was going to be made into a video game.

“Not by Naughty Dog; a different game studio,” Druckmann adds. “Greg Miller [Kinda Funny Games host] introduced me to that studio and we had talked to them for quite a while about doing this thing and then it just fell apart and it didn’t work out. But there was another reality.” Recently, news on the upcoming Last of Us multiplayer sequel in a job listing nodded to the new game being a cross-generation release. As many are familiar, developer Naughty Dog is quietly working on its next major release. And while The Last of Us Part II has been out for nearly three years, the series is facing a new surge in popularity recently. That is to blame for the recently concluded first season of its HBO show on HBO Max. Early on, it was confirmed a second season is already greenlit for the TV series.

Additionally, the overall IP is expanding according to Naughty Dog last summer. In that, a new multiplayer experience is said to already be in development. While details were slim on when the game will ship or how it will differ from the original Last of Us multiplayer experience, it is for certain to be a generational improvement nonetheless understanding how long ago the first iteration came to players on the PlayStation 3.

Recently, eagle-eyed fans online uncovered that there is an interesting use of wording for one job listing posted by the developer. On the game studio’s website for a associate multiplayer quality assurance tester/development support position, the posting asks for certain credentials for the role. In particular, the temporary assignment names “working knowledge of PS4 and PS5 systems.”

Now with the PlayStation 5 more than two years-old, it appears that Sony Interactive Entertainment is planning to release the game as a cross-generation title. Howbeit, this is not the first from PlayStation Studios. To name a few: Horizon Forbidden West, Sackboy A Big Adventure, God of War Ragnarok, and Gran Turismo 7. The games were first introduced as next-generation titles, but still remained to release on the older system.

This is not the only game from Naughty Dog on the way. The team is currently cleaning up on its upcoming port for The Last of Us Part I to PC. The game was originally slated to arrive earlier in 2023, but received a sudden delay to late March instead. You can read the full report by heading here.

What do you think on the next Naughty Dog multiplayer game possibly being cross-gen?
