The most recent releases from PlayStation have started a pattern of shortcomings. Earlier in March, Marathon officially shipped. And while the game does deliver on promises from Bungie, the its sales performance has remained stagnant. The PlayStation firm addressed despite that, it will continue to support the live-service. Additionally, Housemarque’s Saros is also selling less than its predecessor Returnal as well which does not level out the spending on its development.
But, there are heavy hitters on the way from other teams within Sony Interactive Entertainment. The Last of Us developer Naughty Dog is set to ship Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. However, the game is still a ways off reported to ship after this year at the earliest. In 2025, the team did acknowledge fan interest in another The Last of Us, but did share no current plans for another entry currently.
So while development is ramping up for Naughty Dog once again, the question that still remains is how much time can the team continue to use for these extended windows. It should be worth noting the studio has not released a major new entry for this entire console cycle; The Last of Us Part II shipped before the PlayStation 5 in 2020. On Bluesky, Jason Schreier revealed that PlayStation is not happy with the wait.
Oh they definitely have an issue with that

The last project that Naughty Dog was chiseling away at was its live-service Faction II project. The developer in 2023 was eager to ship the game, even asking for more patience from its fans. Despite that, the title was shuttered internally. In an interview with former PlayStation Studios head Shuhei Yoshida, he revealed Bungie offered perspective on the live-service model which resulted in Naughty Dog pulling the plug upon realizing the cost to deliver.Â
So while the game will not likely release until 2027, there is still a decent chance that fans might get a new look at Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet very soon. Next month, a PlayStation State of Play presentation will be taking place with the duration of the showcase being over an hour long. You can read the full report by heading here.
