Looking back a few years before the transition to Meta, Facebook-owned Oculus began building its first-party talent with a string of acquisitions. At the time, we witnessed this with teams for popular VR titles like Population: One’s Big Box VR as well as Onward game studio Downpour Interactive. Additionally, the firm also acquired teams notable on other platforms.
Specifically for PlayStation, Oculus showed interest in talent that built up the PlayStation library. First we saw this with Sanzaru Games. The developer was most notable for its work on Sly Cooper and even the God of War Collection. What’s more, another team – Ready at Dawn – was also welcomed to Oculus after working on multiple PSP titles and even shipped The Order: 1886.
In a new report from Android Central, Meta in a new development is to shut down Ready at Dawn. Since its acquisition back in 2020, the team realized one project so far with Lone Echo II. the outlet received confirmation on the studio closure from an internal memo sent to staffing within Meta.
The announcement comes at a surprising time as Meta’s virtual reality headsets continue to lead in the market. While competition was made with the release of the PlayStation VR 2 in 2023, Meta Quest 2 as well as Meta Quest 3 outpaced the new Sony peripheral this holiday. Roughly 10x sales were recorded for Meta Quest 2 compared to PlayStation VR 2.
On the topic of PlayStation talent now under the Meta banner, developer Camouflaj is focusing on its next major release – Batman Arkham Shadow. From the PlayStation VR exclusive Marvel’s Iron Man VR to a new project at Meta, it recently emphasized on making the new title an experience worth buying the new Meta Quest 3.
