Square Enix announced today that its third-person shooter, Foamstars will be going free to play starting October 4, 2024, after being available for less than a year. Currently, Foamstars is exclusive to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 and once it goes free to play, a PlayStation Plus subscription will not be required to play.

“In addition, while previously a subscription to PlayStation Plus was required to play FOAMSTARS, after the price change, consumers who are not subscribed to PlayStation Plus may download and play FOAMSTARS for free.”

Players who already own Foamstars before the price change will receive a free “Legacy Gift” that includes exclusive in-game items:

-12 exclusive color-variant Bubble Beastie skins
-1 exclusive Slide Board design
-1 title: “Legacy”

It isn’t a huge surprise to see this move coming for Foamstars. It was reported in April that it lost over 90% of its player base after it was available to PS Plus subscribers for free in February. The game is still getting support as it has had a couple of seasons bringing in new content, but its major problem is retaining its players.
