Today, Bungie announced that Destiny 2 will no longer be in active development. The last live service update for the game will go live on June 9, 2026. They tease a “new journey” as the studio going forward.
Bungie states they will ensure that Destiny 2 will remain playable while active development is concluding, just like the original Destiny is today. The final update is going to ensure that Destiny 2 is a welcoming place for players to return to.
“We’re proud of Destiny 2, the places it took us, and the legacy it has created. Because of you all, our universe is vast, built on years of shared stories, adventures, and victories. From the Cosmodrome to the Pale Heart to the Lawless Frontier, we have forged life-long memories and friendships with you all.”
The future of Bungie will be interesting. They have Marathon that just released in March, but it seems like Destiny 3 is not even in development. Sony Interactive Entertainment owns Bungie and has not shared what could be coming next. Sony did mention that Marathon is safe despite shortcomings for PlayStation. The acquisition has lost them over $765 million.
Destiny 2 is available to play on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
