After four years of Smash for Wii U (Smash 4), this era is finally coming to a close. The excitement that surrounded Smash 4 was not only because of a new Smash game on a new console, it was the opportunity to see the top players from Brawl move over to a new game, along with a new fan base.Super Smash Bros. Melee continues to grow, with new faces continuing to appear. The initial thought was this new Smash Bros. game was going to combine all the scenes, and it did at the beginning, but eventually it proved difficult to be a high-performing top player in both Melee and Smash 4 at once. In many ways, the community has had many bumps to smooth out because of that. This is why when Super Smash Bros. Ultimate releases there will likely be a big reset and a brand new opportunity.

A major outcry that comes from the competitive scene is the request to be given attention. In EVOs of the past, Nintendo did not see eye-to-eye with the fan base but have slowly begun to come around. With multiple sponsorships for the biggest tournaments happening year-round, the community is starting to reap the benefits of Nintendo’s presence.

Further proof of this comes from the enhancements made within Ultimate’s training mode, with measurements and character weight being included to help inform players’ decisions. In the past, there have been modifications made that have allowed players to see data that is important in figuring out the best combos for different characters. These same mods have landed players in hot water, so it is a relief to see that modding consoles can be a thing of the past.
Numerous competitors dropped out of previous competitions because their main character was missing in action. Fortunately, the excitement surrounding Ultimate’s new modes and characters has pumped new life into the Smash scene.

Players of the past will dust off controllers once more to see if they can keep up with today’s notable rulers of the scene, such as MKLEO and ZERO, who will be returning from retirement.
The leaderboard will be wiped clean, and past performances in Smash 4 will only carry so much weight. The truth is that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate could be the last game in the series. It has been packed to the brim with almost all of the characters and stages in the entire history of the franchise, with even more to be revealed in the coming months.
Enjoy every moment, from when you push Start and begin chucking Pokeballs at friends, to vying for that first place spot at your local tournament. This is a new beginning for all those passionate about the series, and I see nothing but opportunity for everyone.
