It has been more than a week since Gearbox Software’s long-awaited third in the series, Borderlands 3 officially launched and the title looks to already hitting milestones in its early debut for the gaming market. According to BusinessWire, Borderlands has earned the rank as the fastest sold title under the entirety of publisher 2K’s catalogue of games.
In the report, it shares that the Borderlands 3 within the first five days has racked up over five million copies sold among Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. The release on PC is also reported to be the highest amount of units purchased for the publisher within a five-day timeframe as well.
To make things more interesting, in comparison to 2011’s Borderlands 2, the latest installment has received increase in consumer purchases when in contrast to the last mainline title’s launch by roughly 20 percent more. This also breaks records for the Epic Games Store as the game is exclusive to the platform for the first year: exceeding expectations for the publisher as many fans were vocal about boycotting the game’s unique launch on the Epic’s storefront, but that shows to not be the case now.
This is what David Ismailer, President of 2K has to share on the game’s young success:
We are immensely grateful to everyone who played a role in making the Borderlands series the global, pop culture phenomenon that it is today, including hundreds of developers at Gearbox and many who have made this their life’s work. We also want to thank the Borderlands community. Mayhem does not happen by itself, and their passion for the series is what drives us to make each game an amazing experience.
The publisher also discloses that the Borderlands franchise is now the second biggest franchise under the company as Borderlands 3 broke the series’ Net Bookings into $1 billion during the five-day span last week. Among commercial success, the game has also broke as the most-watched title on launch and is held in the top five most-viewed games on Twitch since the initial release.
Lookin ahead, it will be interesting if the same success on the Epic Games Store will carry over to Google’s Stadia as the game is scheduled to release for the stream-based platform later in November.
Borderlands 3 is out now for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
