It is no mystery about the global concern that is centered around the ever spreading COVID-19 ailment. Since national governments began to limit the amount of social freedoms people are accustomed to, we have witnessed some of the largest events of the year close its doors for 2020 like the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles. Retailers have also been effected, that including GameStop who only recently decided to close the doors to the public.

And while the world’s population is urged to continue going on with social distancing and working from home, a grand influx of users online is expected to put a great amount of stress on internet providers everywhere. In response to the this virtual burden, Sony announced that the company plans to reduce the download speeds for all PlayStation systems in Europe for the time being.

We believe it is important to do our part to address internet stability concerns as an unprecedented number of people are practicing social distancing and are becoming more reliant on internet access.  Players may experience somewhat slower or delayed game downloads but will still enjoy robust gameplay. We appreciate the support and understanding from our community, and their doing their part, as we take these measures in an effort to preserve access for everyone.

Jim Ryan, Sony Interactive Entertainment President & CEO

Gaming while a hobby is surely not a necessity and is understanding for the decision by Sony. Not only does the amount that downloading takes from those in the region, high-intense gaming is also another factor that surely layers more pressure on internet providers as well.

And as concerns continue to grow over the Atlantic Ocean in the United States, Sony later updated the blog post to disclose that the same measures will be implemented in U.S. as well. “We will take similar measures in the United States, and we will continue to take appropriate action to do our part to help ensure internet stability as this unprecedented situation continues to evolve. We are grateful for the role we play in helping deliver a sense of community and entertainment in these very trying times.”

Expecting that these problematic issues on internet providers continue to swell globally, we can expect that Sony will do the same to other neighboring nations in the coming weeks. Are you fine with Sony’s decision to limit internet speeds on their platforms?
