Over the past year, Embracer Group continues to make surprising acquisitions of recognized properties and publishers. Last August, the firm announced its purchase of 3D Realms alongside Ghost Ship Games, Slipgate Ironworks, and more. Additionally, Dark Horse Comics, Perfect World Entertainment, and other acquisitions were made the same time.

However, the most surprising is the impressively cheap $300 million for Square Enix’s suite of western IPs including Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal, and Square Enix Montreal. The arrangement would hand over Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Sleeping Dogs, and more franchises to the entertainment conglomerate.

This week, a new announcement reveals another slew of purchases were made from Embracer Group. Now entities such as Bitwave Games, Gioteck, Limited Run Games, Middle-earth Enterprises, Singtrix, Tatsujin, Tripwire Interactive, and Tuxedo Labs were all bought out from the firm. The most surprising comes from Middle-earth Enterprises as it is the holder for the entire Lord of the Rings series (including the books).

We at the Zaentz Company have had the honor over the past half century of stewarding the Tolkien rights so that Lord of the Rings and Hobbit fans worldwide could enjoy award winning epic films, challenging video games, first rate theatre and merchandise of every variety. We could not be more thrilled that it is Embracer now taking up the responsibility and we are confident their group will take it to new heights and dimensions while maintaining homage to the spirit of these great literary works.

“As an avid collector, I’ve admired Limited Run’s collectors’ editions. They’ve built a strong brand that resonates with players. We see opportunities for Limited Run to further grow their business with the Carbon Engine by bringing back classic games, and extend their footprint geographically through synergies with other companies within Embracer Group,” Embracer Group CEO Lars Wingefor shared for the Limited Run Games acquisition.

Tripwire Interactive CEO Alan Wilson adds, “We’ve known Saber for a while now and are really excited about the opportunity to leverage everything they have to offer. Together we are going to be able to deliver more new Tripwire titles, more often than ever before, as well as ramp up the published titles. We look forward to creating a lot more great games that people will love to play.”
