Dynasty Warriors Origins brings its fast-paced action to the Switch 2 with giant battlefields and hundreds of humans running around. Bringing the game into a hybrid console isn’t easy because you need animations to be smooth at all times. It can be the difference between blocking an enemy’s attack or taking the full impact. Even saving your allies may not go well if the game’s performance drops and you are unable to move quickly.
Cutscenes are a mixed bag on the Switch 2. Some don’t have any problems, especially if there isn’t a battle before or after. If there is a battle, some of the cutscenes play slowly as if the graphic requirements suddenly increased. The speed slowly returns to normal but you occasionally see scenes continue to slow down when the game is about to present a battle. Fortunately it doesn’t make a big impact on the overall scene but it is noticeable.

Actual battles often run smoothly but you may see an impact in the beginning. Smaller maps tend to run faster with brief slowdowns that you might not notice. Larger maps have more to load and gameplay slows down as you are advancing to the front. If maps have special effects, performance may slow down slightly but it’s not easy to notice. Combat is relatively smooth but you can see some downgraded graphics when the camera zooms in.
Combat is smooth for the most part and you can easily respond to attacks if you are paying attention. Timing matters but even if the game is slowing down, your button inputs work as intended. Executing combos is smooth and there are no noticeable problems. If gameplay does slow down in battle, there’s likely a cutscene that is going to play soon. But if you only focus on the battle itself and there are no surprises, framerates don’t drop much.

A keen eye may spot a drop in graphical textures for characters but it would require taking a good look at small details. For the most part, Dynasty Warriors Origins is a great way to experience the game especially on the go. It’s not going to be the smoothest experience you will have, but the Switch 2 is more than capable of providing a good experience.
