The ongoing coronavirus outbreak that illustrates to have a vice grip on the global market, manufacturers, and whole nations has begun to worry anticipating fans coming this holiday season for the approaching console generation. But despite the concerns that have swelled for many, both Microsoft and more recently Sony has urged that the virus will not interfere with the release of either system.

Now shedding more light on the upcoming PlayStation 5, Sony discloses more details on its approaching next-generation console. Speaking with Bloomberg, it was revealed that unlike the preceding PlayStation 4, production of the forthcoming fifth iteration will be in a smaller quantity this time around. However, the decision is not fueled by the ongoing pandemic, Sony tells.

Instead, the choice to manufacture less consoles is solely to based on the “high price” that the company has slated for the unit at launch, anticipating to produce more follow suit the first year of the system’s release. As for the pricing of the PlayStation 5 itself, game developers familiar with the system tells the price range to roughly range between $499 – $549.

Determining the choice for a price grade breaking above $500, this is most likely swayed by the company’s efforts to utilize more expensive components. However, those said components, such as the cooling system for the PlayStation 5, has been reported to be fairly scarce as the firm planned on buying in bulk as smart phone manufacturers begin production on the next line of flagship devices for 2020.

Concerning the exact number of units to be produced for the first fiscal year, Sony shares that about 5 to 6 million will be produced by late March in 2021. Which in contrast is roughly a million less compared to the PlayStation 4 during its first half of its launch year, Bloomberg reports. Moreover, Sony does clarify production could be reorganized depending on the future notion of the novel coronavirus.

The only swaying momentum that Sony claims to hold off releasing the PlayStation 5 is if Microsoft decides to prolong the release of the Xbox Series X, Sony tells. The statement only reiterates on a previous precaution that Sony has disclosed to be patient on its competitor’s move regarding pricing and release window; both still fairly unclear as of yet.

However, Sony does insist that the firm will possibly go ahead with a public press conference to share details on the PlayStation 5 including pricing and the expected retail release. While it is clearly evident that COVID-19 has impeded the company’s marketing for its newest hardware, Sony tells that the reveal of the DualSense gamepad happened to be a rush initiative due to leaks of the controllers already seeping into public eye.
