One of the most critically-acclaimed games of all-time, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, is out for the Wii U Virtual Console.
Nintendo teamed with SquareSoft in 1996 to introduce a new way to play Mario: in RPG form as the title implies. But not only that, the House of Mario and Final Fantasy introduced the timed-hit mechanic (which inspired other RPGs such as The Legend of Dragoon) and an 8-way isometric view..
Super Mario RPG introduced new characters such as Geno, the magical doll that could make other mages tremble with fear, and Mallow, a “frog” that looks more like a cloud than what he says he is, but can still pack a punch with weather powers. Unfortunately, both of these characters were never seen in the Mario universe after this one.
Speaking of Final Fantasy, there is an added bonus boss: Culex. While Culex was never part of the Final Fantasy series, it did use the battle music from Final Fantasy IV, provide some fan service to the series.
Super Mario RPG also contains a great story with some of the funniest lines in a story-driven video game. It’s $8, or $1.50 if you previously owned the version from the original Wii.
