During the fallout of the Xbox One generation, Microsoft amid its acquisitions of Playground Games, Undead Labs, Ninja Theory, and Compulsion Games in 2018, the firm also moved forward with a veteran-ran operation as well – The Initiative. For years, details were light on the team’s inaugural project until late 2020 announcing Perfect Dark would be receiving a reboot.
And it would be even longer until fans were able to see gameplay for the title. This past summer 2024, Xbox Game Studios properly showcased a gameplay presentation for Perfect Dark impressing many for what the full game is to offer. Amid the porous staffing at Microsoft and even Crystal Dynamics with developing layoffs, the title was still deemed safe. At one point, The Initiative even rebooted the effort internally as the work culture at the Santa Monica team was souring also.
However, despite the triumphs and overcoming these obstacles, it appears that The Initiative did not make it out alive as of this latest wave of office firings. According to Windows Central, Xbox Game Studios layoffs have returned with The Initiative in its crosshairs – effectively closing the studio as well as shuttering efforts on Perfect Dark too.
“We have made the decision to stop development of Perfect Dark and Everwild as well as wind down several unannounced projects across our portfolio. As part of this, we are closing one of our studios, The Initiative. These decisions, along with other changes across our teams, reflect a broader effort to adjust priorities and focus resources to set up our teams for greater success within a changing industry landscape,” Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty sent in a memo.
“We did not make these choices lightly, as each project and team represent years of effort, imagination, and commitment. […] For those directly affected, we are working closely with HR and studio leadership to provide support, including severance, career transition assistance, and where possible, opportunities to explore roles on other teams.”
This is not the first time Microsoft blindly shuttered a renowned team due to its efforts on trimming fat for its gaming division. It previously closed Tango Gameworks in 2024 as a result of this decision then. That was before reopening under Krafton earlier this year. You can read the full report by heading here.
