When it comes to recent PlayStation politics, the platform holder is still tapping into live-service. It recently shipped Marathon and listed its first full year content roadmap for the Bungie extraction shooter. However, the game still has a ways to go. Recently, Sony shared that it still plans to proceed with the business model despite recent shortcomings of the developer’s acquisition during its earnings call last week.
Elsewhere, its approach to multiplatform is shifting once more. Bloomberg reported that PC releases are to slim down: single player titles are to abandon the Steam release with Saros & Ghost of Yotei. It was later reported that PC sales were extremely weak thanks to the approach of shipping the titles roughly six months after the console release which did not help the effort.
In a new report from Bloomberg, this time Jason Schreier revealed that CEO Hermen Hulst in an internal town hall verified the previous claim about PlayStation’s plans to step away from PC releases for its single player titles. Instead in-house, story-driven titles are to remain console exclusive moving forward.
This is to apply to upcoming titles currently in the pipeline at Sony Interactive Entertainment. First-party efforts like Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet & God of War Remake Trilogy are applicable to this decision. However, that is not to say for third-party efforts under its publishing umbrella. Titles like 4Loop & Horizon Hunters Gathering are to remain unaffected.
Legacy preservation is a priority that PlayStation is eager to explore as well. While it is not an effort to establish roots in dedicated backwards compatibility, Sony Interactive Entertainment at GDC revealed its Legacy IP preservation program is in full swing with no efforts of ceasing to preserve its library for development tools.
