Nintendo Discontinues The 3DS

Nintendo has been dominant ever since the Switch launched in 2017. Since then there had been some support for the 3DS, but in recent news the Japanese giant has announced that it had discontinued the successful handheld system.

It had been confirmed that the production of the Nintendo 3DS stopped in the early portion of 2020. Here is a statement from Nintendo that was sent to Gameindustry.biz:

“We can confirm that the manufacturing of the Nintendo 3DS family of systems has ended,” a spokesperson said. “Nintendo and third-party games for the Nintendo 3DS family of system will continue to be available in Nintendo eShop, on Nintendo.com and at retail.

Currently there is no plan to end any existing online services for the 3DS.

“We currently have no plans to end any existing online services for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems. Online play and Nintendo eShop will continue to be available and it will be possible to access and redownload all previously purchased content in the foreseeable future.”

On Nintendo’s website there is a note that says the manufacturing of the 3DS family has ended.

The Nintendo 3DS has lived a long life since its release in March 2011 and at that time it was the only thing that was really keeping Nintendo more relevant. I say that because the Wii U was a console that brought the companies reputation down a little bit.

It’s not a surprise that the time has come for the 3DS and some may say that it should have been done 1 or 2 years ago when the Switch was still fairly new.

In other news, Ori and the Will of the Wisps is now available on Nintendo Switch.
