Following the acquisition for Zenimax Media’s Bethesda for Microsoft, the Xbox firm showcased two titles exclusively releasing for the platform: Starfield & Redfall. While the first is the next major RPG from Bethesda Game Studios in over a decade, the latter is a new multiplayer take on the Arkane Studios formula. And before the game’s release – which we know how it turned out – already faced many complaints.

In that, the title would still require an online connection to play even single-player campaign. And Arkane Studios did press it plans to revert that in post-launch. Another after release plan is the addition for 60hz. Redfall’s other major controversy is the original launch only featuring 30 frames per second support on Xbox Series X.

Now some much needed clarity appears to surface online from Bloomberg in a new report. The piece reveals much of the decisions for the direction of the game is a byproduct of power moves from Zenimax. The parent company following the launch of 2017’s Prey amid Fallout 76 development pitched a new title as “Arkane multiplayer game”. This resulted in mass exodus of the employees then.

It goes on to report that roughly 70 percent of the Arkane Austin team that worked on Prey already departed with the remnants to hold their weight for Redfall. And as the team transitioned from Crytek for Prey to Unreal Engine – which was only utilized for the Prey add-on – also answers for the state Redfall launched in. Atop of lack of sufficient staff, leadership was also to blame for no clear direction.

Not only pitching a vague project that employees were against enough to find new work, Zenimax was also said to have urged microtransactions to be a tentpole feature in Redfall. However, that was at least discarded by 2021, the report shares. The state of Arkane Austin with fewer than 100 employees led Redfall to the state fans are familiar with and could now reshift focus for the entire developer.

In a previous interview with Arkane Lyon, the developer pressed that following its work on Deathloop, it’s focus on single-player experiences are behind now. But with the state Arkane Austin shipped Redfall, is it the best choice to abandon what the game studio has shaped into masterclass previously? You can read the full report by heading here.
