Retro gaming, often also referred to as old-school gaming or classic gaming, involves immersing yourself in the now defunct and fairly obsolete collection of early video gaming consoles and some of the first personal computers to play the very first video games.
So, whether you’re looking for a new hobby or else you’ve always been interested in the true origins of gaming, then this article is for you. Continue reading to discover everything you should know about retro gaming.
The Wonder of Instruction Manuals
Unequivocally, one of the most fantastic and heart-warming elements of retro gaming is that, without exception, every single game of the time came with a comprehensive and often particularly chunky, gaming instruction manual.
These days, of course, aside from quick and brief instructions on how to actually load the game coming as standard with every game, all instructions, hints, tips, and other information relating to a game can only be found online.
Back in the day, a gaming instruction manual was far more than a walkthrough companion and instead often also included artwork, lore, and other background information on characters and gameplay.
Bring Retro Gaming into Your Home
Investing in one of the stylish and wonderfully noisy custom arcade machines is by far the most effective and indeed, exciting way of learning everything there is to know about retro gaming.
Not only do such machines create a fantastically striking focal point in any room, but they can also form the hub of social gatherings at home, not to mention that they’re a source of good-natured rivalry between family members both young and old.
It would be worth noting that, far from arcade games being designed for a seamless and simple user experience, gaming designers of the time often deliberately made it extremely difficult to complete their games and that such retro game packages are far from perfect (which adds to their charm).
Single Player Expansion Packs
With the possible exception of Assassins’ Creed and Hogwarts Legacy, the vast majority of expansion packs regularly launched by the world’s leading gaming designers and developers almost always exclusively focus on smaller and multi-player focused expansion packs.
However, back in the glory days of gaming, almost every popular game was automatically followed by single-player downloadable content expansion packs, perfected by the following games:
- Undead Nightmare
- King’s Quest
- Starcraft: Brood War
- Grand Theft Auto: The Ballad of Gay Tony
- Half-Life: Opposing Force
- Diablo: Hellfire
Movies & Games Were Entirely Separate
Much to the chagrin of retro gamers and fans of classic games, these days, any popular game that has been loved and replayed for many years, or even just a couple of years, seems to automatically be turned into a movie.
This leads to games being unfairly compared to movies, with the obvious budgets and other large differences relating to the latter meaning that games tend to fall short of expectations a lot of the time.
However, if movies and games were still entirely separate entities, then nobody would ever feel the need to compare the graphics to each other, like back in the day when retro gaming was at its peak.
Cheat Codes
Think for a second back to your childhood when you spent every morning playing Sonic the Hedgehog on your Sega Mega Drive before school; there was always that one level (usually the second lava level) where no matter what you did and how many times you tried, you just couldn’t beat it.
Similarly, in the Sega Mega Drive Lion King game, as soon as it comes to jumping on the various animals’ backs when they’re enjoying a cool dip in the river, the number of times you would have fallen in and lost a life would be too many to count.
Sega were one of the leading gaming providers and manufacturers who always included a secret list of variations of buttons to form cheat codes for specific levels, and far from reducing the enjoyment and challenge of gameplay, cheat codes actually enhanced the user experience.
Unlockable Extras
Finally, another mainstay of retro gaming is the unlockable extra, which was perhaps the most exciting element within the core structure of a new game you were playing.
These days, even though there are usually a wide range of unlockable extras included in larger games, usually games of an immersive, open world nature, such extras are now widely referred to as optional and cosmetic rather than important cornerstones to further your gaming progress in the main story.
