For the PlayStation 5 lifespan, the platform has remained a high-octane experience for Sony. Off the assembly line, the system was recorded to be the fastest-selling console of all time. However, despite the initial rush since 2020 accounting for more than 60 million units sold, there has been a decrease in console spending.

According to NPD Group analyst Mat Piscatella, the market has lowered its buying power in consoles as of holiday 2023. According to a previous financial report, the PlayStation firm shared that about half the user base still uses PlayStation 4 currently. Additionally, the firm also addressed in a separate filing that PlayStation 5 is already in the latter quadrant of its lifespan.

So with the question in mind on the support for PlayStation 5, Sony Interactive Entertainment has now shared in a statement that the console will remain similar in length to the PlayStation 4. Speaking to Famitsu, co-CEO Hideaki Nishino tells that operating systems overlap and shows the evolution of the platform.

“We believe that the PS5 will be as long as the PS4. However, I don’t think it’s a good idea to delay the timing of the release of the next product that incorporates new technologies because it will be longer. The timing of introducing new hardware is also related to the time frame in which the technology evolves and the time frame in which we can implement it. Therefore, I think it is important for people to play with what is currently in operation, provide new ones, and expand them in total.”

Noted, while console is still a prominent player for PlayStation, it is not the only focus for Sony. Already, it established a firm standing with PC releasing its exclusives on Steam for a few years now. But, the recent hirings for its mobile initiative only illustrate that PlayStation is expanding beyond the conventional console model moving forward. You can read the full report by heading here.
