For years, the attempt for Amazon to get its foot through the door in gaming was certainly questionable in how it would be an effective opponent to the likes of Xbox & PlayStation. And although Luna has outlived Google’s Stadia, there are other efforts by the firm that has left a lasting impression. Titles like New World for example.
Just this past October, New World released on consoles with a new moniker: Aeterum. The game after its trial & error on PC has finally found a solid foundation to ship on more prominent systems with other project in the works as well by the retail conglomerate. Just this past summer, Amazon Games Montreal announced a new free-to-play MOBA March of Giants. The title is currently listed for PC.
However, things are not shaping in favor of the Amazon gaming division after a recent swing of layoffs. It was reported by Bloomberg that over 30,000 employees will be let go – including staffing of Amazon Games and more specifically those who worked on New World. The developer shares that work on the title has now halted due to the decision by Amazon.
“As New World recognizes its fourth anniversary since launching on PC, we reflect on an incredible journey shaped by our dedicated player community. Your feedback and passion have been instrumental in evolving Aeternum into the world it is today, and our team is deeply grateful for this shared adventure,” the team writes. “After four years of steady content updates and a major new console release, we’ve reached a point where it is no longer sustainable to continue supporting the game with new content updates.”
The developer added: “In the coming months, we will provide more details on what to expect and other essential information. Rest assured, our intention is to keep servers operating through 2026, allowing our community time to continue their adventures in Aeternum. Additionally, New World: Aeternum will still be downloadable for PlayStation Plus members (Extra and Premium).”
