Across the spectrum of AAA projects that came from Vince Zampella’s talent for over two decades is a legacy with a lasting impact. His work at Electronic Arts for Medal of Honor to the founding of Infinity Ward and conjuring what many believe to be the ‘Golden Age’ for Call of Duty. And his latest project at Respawn Entertainment curating IPs like Titanfall, Apex Legends, and Star Wars: Jedi – it’s a testament of true creative ingenuity.
Even touching Battlefield most recently, Battlefield 6, Zampella understood the formula to bringing invigorating experiences to the first-person genre that many wish there was more of. So when the report of his passing in late December broke out, it was noted to be a true loss for the industry as his presence was recognized to leave a massive hole in where he sat.
Recently, DICE 2026 held a ‘Remembering a Titan’ keynote that commemorated Vince Zampella and his career in the video game industry. During it, new details were revealed on his work for potential collaborations. One was with Hideo Kojima: the Death Stranding creator said him & Zampella did discuss a potential Metal Gear Solid first-person shooter project sometime after the release for ‘Guns of the Patriots’ in 2008.
“He gave me a lot of support and advice,” Kojima expressed when speaking at the keynote. “He showed me his studio, and I incorporated some of the good aspects into our own studio,” he added; thanks GameFile for the transcription. Kojima at the time of Zampella’s passing also revealed the underdog story both him & the Titanfall boss shared throughout their careers.
“I heard the tragic news that Vince has passed away. I still can’t believe it. I first met Vince during his time at Infinity Ward, when he and Jason were creating ‘COD: MW2.’ After they were forced out of Infinity Ward, Vince went on to found Respawn. When I was preparing to go independent myself, and maybe because he felt we were in similar situations, he took the time to listen to me, offered advice, and supported me in many ways. He even showed me around the studio.”
Kojima in his X post continued: “Even after he moved to DICE, whenever I went to Los Angeles, we would have meals together and talk about our respective futures. I honestly don’t have the words. It’s far too soon. This is heartbreaking.” Of course, his story comes following the notorious fallout with Konami before pursuing Death Stranding.
