There have been some course correcting at XBOX in response to the recent PlayStation update for its physical games. It was reported that Microsoft is already internally testing Project Positron – a disc-to-digital entitlement program which grants users ownership to their account. Ownership has remained a major investment for XBOX even across multiple platforms as former leadership has touted in the past.
However, another concern part of this conversation is account compromise. In recent weeks, there have been multiple stories where the Microsoft accounts were exploited and resulted with users to be locked out of their purchases & other services attached to the profile. The most popular story is of @JoshuaKhane where he lost access to his account of 25 years due to the account being compromised.
On X, XBOX Support did issue that it would restore the account. This was after enough outcry for the situation was amplified. Another instance is of one user in Brazil who took Microsoft to court for their account being hacked and was soon suspended, locking access to their digital library. It resulted in a lawsuit in which the case was favored for the account owner and granted $400 in compensation.
According to Windows Central, Microsoft is even looking to invest in further reinforcement for the process of victims of hacked accounts. “If you invested your time and money in a library with us, we want to honor that trust and keep you connected to what you built,” a source told the outlet in a statement. And although Microsoft is adamant to do right for users that are found unable to access their digital libraries, it can still take from what is purchased.
Recently, TrueAchievements revealed that three titles were hard delisted from the XBOX Store: Creepy Tale, Creepy Tale 2, or Strike Force Kitty. While not significant games on the storefront, the more pressing matter is the fate of said titles. Rather than a simple delisting as the titles are removed from the store, instead a hard delisting was enacted which resulted in being pulled from the XBOX Store as well as user libraries also.
This has been a major concern for the digital future of gaming as it draws the line in where ownership actually holds weight between consumers & platform holders. At PlayStation, it will be removing over 550 shows & movies from purchase libraries simply due to a license expiration with Canal Studio. You can read the full report by heading here.
Are you shocked by this pressing matter still lingering on consoles?
