The Hitman developer IO Interactive has a great few years. Hitman has sold extremely well, and even won some Game of the Year awards but that didn’t stop Square Enix from putting this developer up for sale.
Speaking to investors, Square claims despite really strong sales, it seems the game didn’t pull a profit though as Square lost $42 million in its financial results.
To maximise player satisfaction as well as market potential going forward, we are focusing our resources and energies on key franchises and studios. – Square talked about in a statement
So the future of Hitman is really unknown. We could see another Hitman title from some other Square studio but with Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Kingdom Hearts, Marvel, and others being much bigger, my guess is they’ll stick with those big IPs.
At least IO has confirmed they’re still making games despite the rough time:
Thanks for the support, Dave. There's a lot going on right now and we'll have more to say at a later point. For now, back to making games.

Square Enix added IO to their vast lineup of developers after they acquired Edios Interactive way back in 2009.
