Yesterday, chatter would not cease regarding the new demo that surfaced online. Well not directly a demo since it is essentially a full walkthrough, but it was the first ever footage of Epic Games’ Gears of War 3 being recorded through a build intended for PlayStation 3. The video uncovered online then led followers to believe that the developer at the time were planning to bring the game to the platform alongside the initial Xbox 360 system we associate the third entry with.
However, the demo only happens to be intended to demonstrate the capabilities of the engine used on Sony’s hardware, Epic Games shares. After speaking with Kotaku, the outlet’s Editor-in-chief Stephen Tutilo shared in a tweet that the emerging video only holds as a test for PlayStation 3 performance for Unreal Engine 3.
Despite the reputation that the PlayStation 3 earned through third-party titles being worked on for the system, the game does look to perform exceptional for the era of hardware. Gears of War 3 throughout segments of the demo looked to maintain a 20+ frames per second frame rate for majority of the run through. Developers at the time did show to struggle understanding the architecture of the PlayStation 3, but Epic Games looked to overcome the obstacle.
More so Unreal Engine 3, the engine is quite versatile to adapt to different hardware and implement certain elements that will properly function to some extent on most systems it runs into. But reflecting on what was groundbreaking then to the approaching Unreal Engine 5 surely does paint me surprised on how far that technological processing and rendering has come within the past decade.
Even more, Sony and Epic Games have partnered to showcase the new engine with a full presentation shown during Summer Game Fest earlier this month. While the new engine does show to be very demanding, Epic Games went on to clarify that Unreal Engine 5 will still be aimed for current systems, mobile, and even Nintendo Switch alongside the approaching next-generation counterparts.
