With AAA developers pumping out more and more games each year, new IPs and sequels to old ones, it all starts to stack up making it inconvenient for when they finally release.
Back in October of 2016 with EA released both Battlefield 1 and Titanfall 2 a week within one another. Resulting with Battlefield selling over 15 million copies by 2017 and leaving Titanfall failing to meet expectations for sales, selling below three quarters from the original title and estimated to have sold 4 million copies. EA responded that they estimated there were three types of players that either love Battlefield, love Titanfall or a player that has to buy both. But from these sales numbers show that there was more to come into play than just the type of players interested.
Even CEO of Respawn Entertainment couldn’t tell you if there would be a following game when asked if there would be a Titanfall 3 in an Glixel interview at the time. Stated by Zampella:

We don’t know yet. The game is, critically, a huge success. We’re really happy with all the reviews and the positive sentiment. Sales, it’s too early to tell.

Then with the recent line of news having Anthem being delayed and laying out 2018 – 2020 with EA’s line of titles, that yet again two more of their titles will release simultaneously. Not as extreme, but still close. It was predicted that Visceral Games’ Star Wars title would release in early to late Spring of 2019 along with Respawn’s Star Wars project to release as early as holiday of 2019. Yet again having EA put Respawn in the same situation back in 2016, and on top needing both games to somehow differentiate between one another and DICE’s Battlefront.
And even now in 2018 with the recent news of Yakuza 6 being delayed to April, having both that and the upcoming God of War title to stack on one another. Especially for both being exclusive to Playstation 4 as well, will definitely hurt the numbers more compared to EA multiplatform games. Following with any game releasing in fall of 2018 as recently announced that Red Dead Redemption 2 will be releasing this October, leaving everybody to assume the game will do great as expected and having every other title to be forgotten about.
For as this is all seeming to become a pattern, it isn’t certain that this will be the demise for future titles affected by this. As some games look over others the fan bases behind those games are what keeps them alive for another title. The vast majority of those who buy the bigger games tend to bounce from one title to the next while smaller will keep those who truly enjoy it.
