For those who might remember from over a decade ago before the mainline source of gaming entertainment was provided through livestreaming, back when Twitch was still Justin.tv, there was G4. A television network owned by NBC Universal that focused on video game news and featured other televised entertainment focusing on the industry at the time. However, viewers can recall that the network was shutdown in late 2014 and replaced by the Esquire Network.
And despite the network’s closure for majority of this console generation to frame the time period, it looks that G4 is returning with a new approach to revitalize the network for gaming entertainment. This past week, the network’s official Twitter account shared a video revealing that G4 is coming back next year.
With the post titled “We never stopped playing,” the only other details that came with the video was the ‘2021’ release window for G4 returning officially. Thankfully, industry insider Rod Breslau has received some tips on the networks revival for modern entertainment. In that, he discloses that the current owner of the license for G4, Comcast, is behind the operation to revive the network.
Instead of G4 returning to its roots for televised entertainment, it is shared that G4 will be focusing on web-based broadcasting when it arrives next year. This event follows the interest in gaming-based media as Spector Gaming President Tucker Roberts – who also owns invests in esports organization T1 and the Philadelphia Fusion Overwatch franchise team – is helming this new endeavor.
It was later disclosed that the teaser trailer provided is a byproduct following months of discussing from previously on G4 returning. With Roberts being the son of Comcast CEO Brian Roberts, this also explains the progress that has evolved quickly in the revival for G4 slated in the coming year.
Despite talks of the network coming so abruptly for next year, many of its original employees are left in the dark about what is coming for G4’s next chapter. Many of those who left went to pursue other entertainment networks online such as Rooster Teeth. Former Funhaus Bruce Green and Joel Rubin have both commented to be unaware of what this new return for G4 is.
Would you watch G4 if it returned with a new online format?
