Blizzard’s first-person, arena shooter Overwatch since the game’s 2016 release has received over a dozen of updates introducing new content through fresh maps, characters, or seasonal events. And despite the previous report that Activision is already planning to bring a sequel to the series alongside a fourth installment for the Diablo series, Blizzard has readied the next entry into the game’s roster.
Just yesterday, the game’s official YouTube Channel uploaded the origin story video giving the character some background for his coming to receiving the alias ‘Sigma’ and his fixation on controlling gravity. Now, Blizzard has uploaded a full Developer Update which covers all of the character’s aspects regarding his story and his presence in the game.
Game Director Jeff Kaplan speaks on the basis behind Sigma as he shares that following a disaster when attempting to capture the strength of a black hole is imprisoned by International Space Station and given the title Subject Sigma. Kaplan verifies that Sigma will be another Tank class, but in contrast to Reinhart or Winston, he can deploy his “experimental barrier” at different points and locations to benefit his teammates.
His primary weapon are the Hyperspeheres which shoot in a two-round burst: the short-range weapon will have the chance to bounce off objects once and when landing explodes which emits proximity damage and even pulls opponents towards the area of detonation. For his defense ability, Sigma is equipped with Kinetic Grasp which converts all incoming projectile into protective shields: Kaplan clarifies the shields only collects until 400 with possible tweaking following the character’s debut.
Sigma’s offensive ability will create a ball of matter from the earth and use the mass as a projectile to inflict a great amount of damage whilst knocking them down. For his ultimate, Gravitic Flux is triggered in a selected proximity which propels the enemy team into the air, free of gravity and vulnerable for you along with your teammates to attack before they are pulled back to the ground.
As for when players can expect to get their hands on Sigma, it is expected that the 31st hero will be available in the playtest realm fairly soon following today’s reveal.
Overwatch is out now for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
