The arrival of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 sent a shockwave through the gaming industry. Releasing on all major platforms alongside Xbox Game Pass, it is revealed that over half a million copies were sold in the first day alone. By mid September, the Sandfall Interactive title reached over 4.4 million players. But that was only the start of the craze.
According to the French developer, a franchise is upon this release in what will become a growing series. “Clair Obscur is the franchise name. Expedition 33 is one of the stories that we want to tell in this franchise,” director Guillaume Broche said. Additionally, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was already greenlit for a live-action film too. The production is in its infancy with Story Kitchen to produce.
Now recently, new information has been revealed about the RPG. According to Sandfall Interactive, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has sold over 5 million copies. To celebrate the milestone, a free update is on the way which will include “A new, playable environment, taking the characters of Expedition 33 to a brand-new location with new enemy encounters and surprises to discover.”
It continues: Challenging, new boss battles for late-game players to overcome; New costumes for each member of the Expedition, giving even more customization options for players throughout their adventure.” Elsewhere, it was also revealed that alongside the free update, things are already in motion for the sequel for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 as well. “We’re still working on Expedition 33 and improving the game on our side, and there will be some new content [the aforementioned update] in the coming months as a thank you update to our players,” Broche told PCGamesn.
“We are starting to think and work on the next real game, which is super exciting, and we have a lot of very good ideas. […] We want to make stories like an art house, making crazy projects because we want to make them, and that’s the philosophy we want to stick by – especially now because we have so much attention and so much love from the players. […] We know now how to make games that are good with a smaller team and a really strong vision, and that’s what we want to do again.”
