According to the market research firm The NPD Group, the gaming industry made $724 million in revenue in the U.S. last month, down 21%. Hardware, console and PC software, and accessories are all down compared to the same period last year. Revenue from console hardware is falling the hardest.
“Total hardware spending in February declined 30 percent versus February 2016 to $204 million,” NPD analyst Mat Piscatella said in a statement. “Console hardware accounted for 82 percent of the total declines as both average retail pricing and units sold fell versus year ago.”
For Honor and Resident Evil 7 top the charts while Grand Theft Auto V continues to stay in the top 5. As for hardware, the PS4 continues to be the top-selling system, but console sales are dropping due to Sony and Microsoft saturating much of their potential market. It is speculated that most consumers are waiting to purchase the Nintendo Switch, PS4 Pro, and Xbox Scorpio.
