There shows to be a spectrum for those imposed by the recent PlayStation news. For those unfamiliar, the plans established by Sony’s reveal that it will end production on physical releases for new games upon entering 2028. What further proves the firm is not stepping down on the move despite the backlash is the PlayStation 6 leaks. According to Kelper_L2, it points to a $1,000 price tag and won’t even include a disc drive either.

In one regard, there are personalities that questioned the decision. Like former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden, describing the choice to be “dramatic” knowing that there is a large market still for physical titles. However, there is another in favor for the shift like Ubisoft. “What we saw on the PC is that it helped to grow the market, Yves Guillemot said during the latest Ubisoft earnings call.

Another recent instance comes from Sega president and COO Shuji Utsumi. Speaking to Famitsu, Utsumi elaborates that Sega ultimately is still in favor of supporting its titles to a physical extent despite the amount of digital purchases outweigh the counterpart.

“We used to develop consoles, and of course, we still have a fondness for physical culture,” Utsumi says, GamesRadar translated. “So rather than completely abandoning it, we are currently considering the important elements of digital media, and simultaneously trying to make a shift. […] We think the shift towards digital titles is key.

Utsumi further elaborates with: “I think it’s important to strengthen our digital products in order to develop this market. [Japan] has a culture of physical media, but I think it’s necessary that we’re conscious of digital content in order to become more global.” Sega is not the only one still committed to physical releases as Capcom shared its commitment to the business model back in 2024 before the recent controversy.
