Historically, TV and movie series based on video games have not been treated with respect (Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Captain N, etc). With the popularity of Netflix, that could change with the new TV series, Castlevania: Vengeance.
The new trailer starts off cleverly enough with a custom-made NES cartridge of the series. When inserted into the classic NES console (even blowing into that cartridge), it shows the graphics of the trailer preview in its 8-bit glory. The synopsis reads “The last surviving member of the disgraced clan fights to save Eastern Europe from Dracula. Inspired by the classic NES game…”The white square cursor in the beginning moved a little too fluidly because most cursors from classic NES games were linear and fixed (but that’s another story). The new series is actually an Anime-style one showing only clips of certain characters, one of them possibly being Trevor Belmont and the other Sypha Belnades (judging from her bluish outfit). And there is blood, something that you would normally see in violent Anime media.
After enduring much criticism from the firing of Hideo Kojima, to the mistreatment of employees, and to recent questionable game titles, Konami hopes to earn back gamers’ trust with the new animated series that very much in line on what is expected from the classic horror game. At least gamers don’t have to endure this version of Simon Belmont again (see above), right?
Castlevania: Vengeance will be out on Netflix July 7th.
