Amid the ongoing crisis that is underway at Microsoft currently thanks to its decision to revamp Xbox Game Pass, other tragedies already occurred earlier on in 2025. Following another wave of layoffs at the Xbox firm, it was revealed that multiple projects under Microsoft would not live on. Among those, one is Perfect Dark as developer The Initiative shuttered its Santa Monica studio.

Additionally, other IPs that were in active development was also closed as well. Rare’s Everwild – revealed back in 2019 – was canned alongside veteran leadership like Gregg Mayles & Louise O’Connor also exiting. Other titles like Hideo Kojima’s OD was safe from the action, but it left a gaping hole in what many fans were anticipating to see release from Xbox then.

Well although this game has not been pressed upon for over a decade, there is an update on the long ago teased espionage game unveiled at the Xbox One presentation in 2013. Via DidYouKnowGaming, Liam Robertson discloses the then-understood codenamed Shangheist was internally addressed as ‘Project Ranger’. It was revealed that the game was properly cancelled back in 2014.

But from what the game was aiming to pursue was Microsoft’s answer to Uncharted with an action spy twist. Forming Black Tusk Studios, the team was originally intended for mobile titles & Sesame Street Kinect experiences under the name Zipline Studios. But when the release of Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception showed massive promise in 2011, Microsoft was eager to chase after the flame.

Details from the video essay revealed that several concepts for gadgets were in the concept phase. One in specific included manipulation of adversary voicework to use against them in-game. Moreover, there was even heavy consideration of the Kinect being a primary tool in Project Ranger. But, the game would still remain predominantly operated with a controller.

Of course, Black Tusk Studios eventually transitioned into The Coalition as it focused its energy on propelling the Gears of War IP. Speaking of Uncharted, it was speculated that the studio’s Unreal Engine 5 demo ‘Alpha Point’ was potentially a nod to the inspirations, but nothing manifested from just the technical showcase. Phil Spencer described Project Ranger as “a concept piece” much like Alpha Point it. You can read the full report by heading here.
