Nintendo has recently released a lot of news after its financial results were released for Q1 2026. The Switch 2 has sold just under 20 million units worldwide, while the Switch has sold just under 156 million units.
The Switch’s lifespan ended up being 8 years from when it was released in 2017 to when the Switch 2 launched in 2025. Nintendo is clearly still supporting the predecessor, but focus is slowly shifting to the new generation.
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa talked to investors following the financial reports and talked about the future of the Switch 2. According to the Nintendo president, the company plans for the Switch 2 to have just as long a lifespan as the Switch did. They have also teased that they are working on a strong software lineup for the hardware.
During the life of the Switch, we did see some sort of mid-generation upgrade to the handheld portion of it. The Switch OLED launched about halfway into its life, providing a vibrant screen for handheld gaming. Could we see the Switch 2 get something similar?
