While parent company Krafton is occupied with PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, active players can already recognize the shift in identity for the game. Firstly, that is not the name of the title any more. Now, it has been relabeled to ‘PUBG Battlegrounds. Yes, I know. However, more shifts in the chemistry of the project is also underway.
Notably, the creator of the battle royale pioneer has departed from the project. Previously in September, Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene shared he will be exiting from the operation to start up his own venture. In that, he went on to found PlayerUnknown Productions to work on an unnamed project.
More recently in November, Krafton shared its next decision in expanding in the industry is through acquisition. With that, the team has purchased Subnautica developer Unknown Worlds Entertainment.
Unknown Worlds are incredibly skilled and passionate developers with an unparalleled gift for creativity and a proven track record of building successful player-driven worlds. Krafton will spare no effort in helping them. Not only do they enhance our development capabilities, but we share a goal of creating unique experiences for global audiences.
CH Kim, Krafton CEO
“It was immediately apparent how closely Unknown Worlds and Krafton are aligned in the way we think about games and game development,” Charlie Cleveland, Unknown Worlds Entertainment CEO said. “Subnautica and PUBG both started humbly and evolved successfully through constant iteration and feedback. We want to bring new games to the world stage – and with Krafton , we’re a big step closer. We’re truly looking forward to our future together.”
Thankfully, the culture at Unknown Worlds Entertainment will remain intact following the purchase. However, the team will be working on “a new genre-defining game” scheduled for next year. The team is also said to be continuing its work on Subnautica and the recently release Subnautica: Below Zero as well.
