
While 2024 has certainly been an interesting year in term of hardware performance, it also revealed new intentions moving forward. While Microsoft remains behind its competitors, plans for multiplatform support while simultaneously working towards its next-generation system is already underway. Similarly, PlayStation is following in the same footsteps with its system also shipping select titles to PC as it has been doing.
As for hardware performing in the market, the PlayStation 5 has officially overtaken 60 million units. Additionally, Nintendo Switch is also breaking records with the hybrid console selling roughly 150 million units. What’s more, the Nintendo Switch is even closing in on global sales for the PlayStation 2 – outselling the system in the United States.
And now with the Nintendo Switch 2 officially on the radar for 2025, even more is expected from consoles. Howbeit, the entire conversation is only a portion of the overall market. In fact, PC is another platform that has gripped onto market share for a similar amount of time. Exiting 2024, gamesindustry.biz has gathered that consoles have out done PC last year.

According to a graphic provided by the outlet, the overall market earnings for is a combined $184.3 billion. For consoles, the platform market generated roughly $50.3 billion whilst PC has accumulated about $41.5 billion. The remaining market share is in possession of mobile gaming which makes up the other 50 percent with over $92.5 billion.
The report also includes market leaders in software sales – and as expected, console leads with at least 16 percent in physical releases over PC with approximately 1 percent. For consoles & PC, digital sales account for 84% and 99% respectively. Although digital purchasing surpasses physical media, publishers such as Capcom are still behind the medium for ownership as shared in a previous financial report.
As for the split between consoles & PC, the platform to extend its reach fully is Microsoft. Although PlayStation & Xbox already release its titles on PC, Microsoft has disclosed efforts to deliver a genuine Xbox experience to keyboard & mouse as part of its initiative for handhelds in the coming future.
