Console gamepads have proven to be one the most essential tools that people who indulge in gaming would use, of course. Although there is the option for keyboard & mouse on PC and its slow integration to Xbox and even PlayStation, majority of standard players on retail units are using controllers. However, there is so much more that can be done with the hands-on products beyond what is already available for the item.

For example, Microsoft has continuously gave new additions to the standard Xbox One controller throughout the course of this console generation with implementation of better grips on the backing, analog sticks, and even triggers which does give an extra edge when in use. Not to mention the Xbox Elite controller which just released its second iteration this Fall, offering a slew of improvements from the vanilla gamepad as well as the first series, the most hardcore of players can find something that suits their needs.

Now recently, Sony Interactive Entertainment revealed that the Dualshock 4 will be receiving an additional upgrade pretty soon. Announcing the Back Button attachment, users can simply attach the additional button set onto the back of the controller to give players more freedom with how they play, along with ease for more strategic mutton mapping. One inserting the attachment onto the gamepad, you can map both buttons to any of the available options on the Dualshock 4.

Even more, the attachment also features a OLED circle-shaped screen that can be used to swap the set buttons with a simple press. With up to three configurations, you will have different playstyles literally in the palm of your hands with the press of the glass button. The screen will also display which buttons are set on the buttons for each of the three settings you have established on the attachment.

Noted, this is an awesome addition for those who want to reap some of the benefits alike owners of the competing Xbox Elite controller without having to actually fork over for an additional gamepad or look at third-party suppliers. However, it is shocking how late into the generation that Sony Interactive Entertainment decided to push this additional piece for the Dualshock 4 as the next controller is upon us in 2020. Unless the Dualshock 4 will be compatible with the PlayStation 5, it does not look to be a smart move.

Just last month, it was discovered that patents for the Dualshock 5 leaked ahead of the controller’s official reveal. The unannounced gamepad features bigger triggers, smaller analog sticks, and ditches the iconic light bar from this generation. Microsoft just last week also debuted the upcoming controller for Xbox alongside the debut of the Series X model.

The Dualshock 4 Back Button attachment will be available on January 23, 2020 for $29.99.
