Under the arrangement for Sony Interactive Entertainment’s acquisition of Bungie that was revealed this week, it is presumed that the deal would produce unique content for the fleet of gaming hardware. However, that is not always the case. When it comes to major publishers or entities, the intent might align with different ambitions. Looking at the buyout for Activision Blizzard by Microsoft, that is still in a very gray area currently.

Of course, Microsoft is to honor any obligations between Activision and any competing platforms. Xbox lead Phil Spencer went on to address it aims to back any marketing agreements that the new purchase has made. In a separate report by Bloomberg, Activision is dedicated to still supporting its projects aimed for PlayStation well into 2023 next year.

On the topic of the Bungie deal, Sony Interactive Entertainment President & CEO Jim Ryan shares that the acquisition is to strive for a multiplatform, live service approach for the company moving forward.

We are starting to go multiplatform, you’ve seen that. We have an aggressive road map with live services. And the opportunity to work with, and particularly learn from, the brilliant and talented people from Bungie… that is going to considerably accelerate the journey we find ourselves on.

He adds, “Philosophically, this isn’t about pulling things into the PlayStation world. This is about building huge and wonderful new worlds together.” Additionally, Bungie CEO Pete Parsons also comments on the developer striving for other mediums when it comes to the new, unannounced IP that it has cooking currently, he told gamesindustry.biz.

“You can’t help but look at Sony’s accomplishments, not just as a great platform, and having easily some of the best development teams in the entire world. But also one of the greatest entertainment companies in the world,” says Parsons. “We saw this great opportunity to build — not just Destiny, we’re working on more than Destiny — these great interactive experiences, which we think we’re good at. But also being able to explore these worlds even more.”

Ryan continues, “I would back us to do [live-service games] ourselves, but when you have the potential to have a partner like Bungie who has been there, done it all before, learned the lessons and have got this wonderful, brilliant team who is there and has the potential to help us… we think we can take something that would have taken a certain number of years, and significantly decrease the time it will take to get it right.”
